March 17 through March 22, 2008
The Lake Superior State University Public Safety Department reports the following activity:
The Public Safety Department received two separate reports of sexual assaults that occurred on campus.  One was reported on March 16 and the other on March 18.  Both complaints have been turned over to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department and are being handled by their detectives.
The smell of candles burning attracted the attention of the RA staff in Brady Hall on Saturday, March 22.  The RA’s checked the room in question and discovered several prohibited items including the candles.  The RA staff confiscated the candles along with a hot plate and furnishings that rightfully belonged in the common areas of the hall.  Public Safety officers confiscated a hunting bow.  The bow was taken back to the Public Safety Department for storage.  The residents of the room will undoubtedly be speaking further with the Housing Office.
In addition to the above actions, the Public Safety Office handled the following routine activities:  5 weapons escorts, 40 room admits, and 1 motorists assist.  We also received 10 lost and found property complainants, and assisted maintenance with 1 problem.
Public Safety Tip of the Week:  Please remember that you can protect yourself better than anyone.  Be smart, be aware, be safe.

Friday, 28 March 2008

If you haven’t already, you should pay a visit to the Rex T. Marsh oil painting exhibit in the Kenneth Shouldice Library Art Gallery. Times you can visit are from 8:30am to 12am. His work is currently on display from March 3rd to the 31st.  The art exhibit itself is composed of Rex’s new and old work, including pieces from different time periods and styles. His pieces include a soldier in Iraq, a ship in the St. Mary’s River, and a painting of September 11th, with a religious aspect to it. In the gallery, viewers can make comments about the exhibit in a sign in book provided by the library. Along with the exhibit here at Lake State, many of his other works can be seen at Sault Realism on West Portage. Their hours are Monday through Friday, 10-6, and Saturday, 12-5.  Rex, who is originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, began painting at the age of 12.  He said that “I didn’t start getting serious about it until after I finished high school.”  Rex attended Interlochen as a youth, and is a 1995 graduate of Kendall University of Art and Design.  He currently resides here in Sault Sainte Marie, producing paintings and prints.  Being that he is from Michigan, Rex claims that some of his favorite paintings to do have to deal with Michigan history.  He just recently completed a traveling exhibition called “Celebration of the U.P.” that went through Wyoming, Michigan, and Canada. Rex went on to say that he “Likes painting from every aspect and trying different styles.”  This can be seen in his exhibit in the library being that there really is no central theme which gives the exhibit much variety to the viewer.  For more information about Rex Marsh and his work, you can visit Saultrealism.com, or there will rexmarsh.com will becoming soon.

That’s Right: The Engineers Left CAS PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kenneth Casperson
Friday, 28 March 2008
Hard as some may find it to believe, the CAS building was found almost entirely devoid of engineers last Thursday – if only for about two hours. Despite the belief of some, the engineers can exist in the sun – oh, wait, the event they left the warmth of CAS to go to was also inside.
Never mind.

A Day of Pie... Or Not PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kenneth Casperson
Friday, 21 March 2008

Pie comes in a multitude of sizes, flavors, and levels of deliciousness, but if you happen to be a mathematician, your favorite variety is probably not the sort that will help you gain five pounds over a weekend. You are more likely for the sort that always forgets an ‘e’ and comes in the shape of 3.1415925 (with many more decimal places coming after it that it would be silly to fill a paper with) – the magical number of circles, cycles, and no sugar at all: Pi.
