Faculty Meets To Discuss Assessment PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kayla Robertson
Sunday, 16 March 2008

On Thursday, February 28, several faculty members, including professors from the Political Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science departments, met in the Anchor Room to discuss how to best assess student progress and class material/curriculum. The forum is part of a meeting to keep professors communicating with one another and sharing ideas about how to improve their classes. The forum is a social event with lunch served before a presentation on teaching philosophy and a discussion. Several teachers attended and students were invited to attend.

At the forum, Lorraine Gregory presented a PowerPoint about how to properly assess the needs of each class. She spoke about how to determine the needs of each student, how to make effective tests, and how to correct differences in curriculum, and objectives. Her goal was to present a way to make a class effective in reaching goals related to the course material and description while helping students feel successful and preparing them properly for their field.

The forum was hosted by and attended primarily by Mathematics and Computer Science professors (Dr. Lorraine Gregory works closely with both the Mathematics and Education departments) but the discussion was relevant to teachers across the disciplines.

At the end of the meeting it was proposed that all professors be required (or encouraged) to attend a seminar on how to effectively write objectives for class syllabi. The main concern is that vague or inaccurate wording in course objectives leads to ineffective classes because you can’t assess non-specific goals in terms of failure or success.

Public Safety Report PDF Print E-mail
Written by LSSU Public Safety

February 24 through March 9, 2008
On Tuesday, February 26th, the Department was notified of a bio-hazard situation in Crawford Hall.  Officers responded and found a small amount of blood on the floor in the east basement.  Maintenance was contacted to handle the situation.
Also on Tuesday, February 26th, officers responded to a domestic situation involving suite mates in the Village.  While officers were assisting Campus Life in resolving the situation, one of the individuals became unhappy with the process and returned to his room where he assaulted his suite mate by pushing him.  The pair was separated and alternative living arrangements were made for one of the individuals.  The victim also met with members of the Sault Police Department.
A staff member at the Arts Center called on Tuesday, February 26th, to report a woman who was behaving in an argumentative manner.  The woman was also said to have attempted to gain access to a concert without a ticket.  Officers will be checking the area periodically as a result.
A student reported receiving a harassing/threatening email on Thursday, February 28th.  The complaint was turned over to the Sault Police Department.
The owner of a vehicle parked in H Lot reported that someone had siphoned gas from the tank of his vehicle at some point between February 24 and 29.
On March 3, an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation contacted the Public Safety Office while doing a background check on a former student.  The agent was interested in information pertaining to a parking citation the student had received while attending the University.
Later on the same date, an investigator with the US Customs and Border Protection Service also contacted the department for a background check.  He seemed unimpressed to discover that the subject of his investigation had received several parking citations while attending the University.
A member of the custodial staff assigned to the Norris Center observed a woman standing in the stairwell of the building.  When the custodian engaged the woman in small talk, she threatened to jump from the second floor and put her leg over the railing.  Officers from the department arrived on the scene and managed to keep the woman from injuring herself until members of the Sault Police Department and Sault Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene.
Officers on random patrol observed a subject in Brady Hall carrying two large rolls of toilet paper.  The subject stated that he was going to ‘mess up his roommate’s room’ with them.  The officers instructed the individual to return the paper to the restroom he had taken it from, which he did.  The individual then left Brady Hall empty-handed.
In addition to the above actions, the Public Safety Office handled the following routine activities:  26 weapons escorts, 79 room admits, and 9 motorists assists.  We also received 7 lost and found property complainants, investigated 3 alarm, assisted maintenance with 9 problems and investigated 1 vehicle accident.
Public Safety Tip of the Week:  It’s easy to believe that your behavior while in school will not affect your life once you leave the University.  That belief, however, may be incorrect.  In this day and age of heightened security concerns, many business conduct in-depth background investigations on potential employees.  Do not let your behavior here keep you from that perfect job in the future.

AG Silver Performs at Lake State PDF Print E-mail

In a performance on February 25, AG Silver brought their unique style to LSSU’s Peacock Cove. The band was touring college campuses across the United States (Lake State being their second stop) with their newest album, “Wake Up and Smell Reality”. The band had a great performance (with a wonderful audience of almost 150 students). Despite their small “stage”, the boys of AG Silver were full of enthusiasm. They made the stage their own and brought a lot of excitement to the basement of the Cisler Center. They performed mainly original pieces (several upbeat songs that sound like a cross between U2 & Muse and then several slower songs that you put you in the mind of Keane) but also covered some material. A cover of The Killers’ “Somebody Told Me” was a crowd pleaser as well as their seamless transition between original work and the theme from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”. Both covers had touches of originality but The Fresh Prince received a face lift, to say the least.

On Thursday and Friday before Spring Break, several staff members from the Learning Center gave presentations for the Student Success Seminars program. Among the topics covered were Basic Grammar, Memory and Concentration, and Notetaking and Study Strategies. The seminars are aimed at students of all levels, learning styles, and degree paths.

Topics discussed are intended to refresh students on things like MLA style, APA style, and basic grammar, or to introduce them to new ideas about how to learn best and make themselves more likely to succeed. It’s a great opportunity to create positive study habits and improve chances of academic success.

What It Means to be a Laker PDF Print E-mail
Written by Justin Hester
Friday, 29 February 2008

Last weekend’s games made many season ticket holders’ passes worth the money.  The Lakers, kept it interesting while they won both games.  There were missed chances and sloppy play (can anyone say “second period of Saturday night”?), but more importantly there were two wins, including an overtime win on Friday.  Not only that, but the team showed that they can mesh together, and play as one on-ice cohesive unit that includes offense and defense.  And this cohesive play was what led to two wins.  That and some good senior night karma according to Coach Roque: “how fitting was it that Blaine and Dan got goals tonight, must have been good karma.”
