On Tuesday October 30 at 8 p.m., Dave Tamkin was once again in the Galley entertaining Lake State students with his singing and acoustic guitar. This is Dave’s third time playing in the Galley and he says that he “hopes there will be a fourth.” Dave Tamkin, who is originally from Chicago, has been touring the country doing what he loves, entertaining audiences with his music. Dave’s performance took place for over an hour, as students listened to songs that he wrote himself, covers of other songs, stories behind his songs, and about his life and his career. The dim and intimate setting that he played in put his performance on a more personal level making students connect with his music, and have fun listening to him play and talk. He also got the audience involved by choosing what songs to play next, telling them jokes or stories about relationships, school and how he loves coming to Sault Sainte Marie. Dave played many songs from previous visits here, as well as many new songs that will be on his up and coming CD. LSSU is only one of the many schools that Dave has performed at. Besides playing at LSSU, he says that he “tours the country playing over 250 shows a year at colleges and venues.” As with all singers that come for Music in the Galley, Dave brought many CDs that were available for students to purchase. Dave is one of many people that LSSUs Activities Board brings in for Music in the Galley. Hopefully, there will be many more visits from Dave in the future. This weekend introduced the Fall ’07 season of Black Box Theatre to Lake State. This particular performance included two one-act plays and a preview of the touring company’s “Proud Monster” which will be presented at a festival in Detroit late this winter. The Black Box Theatre Company, headed by Gabriella Castillo, held auditions in mid-September and has spent the past seven weeks rehearsing the two one-act plays. Recently, some students on campus, some meaning the 175 LSSU Engineering students, received an email from Dean Walworth regarding a new policy going into effect in the department with regards to that wonderful time saving mechanism we’ve all come to know and love – the calculator. Before anyone panics, the policy is non-mandatory, meaning it is up to the professor to choose which calculators can and cannot be used at whatever time. The new calculator to be used is the TI-36X Solar, a fairly simple scientific calculator, which, as the name might suggest, doesn’t use batteries, but may, according to the Compass’ own Editor in Chief, take a few minutes to ‘warm up’ in the dim lighting of the robotics lab.
