The Lake Superior State University Public Safety Department reports the following activity for the period of August 30, 2008 through September 21, 2008: At approximately 0300 on Saturday, August 30, an officer on patrol noticed a female student at the Townhouses that appeared to be ill. When her friends noticed the appearance of the PSD, they escorted the female into a Townhouse. The officer then attempted to contact the female in question to make sure she did not need medical help but was met by a male subject who denied any knowledge of the girl. The officer then contacted the Sault Police, who arrived and gave the female a choice between taking herself to the hospital or going to jail. She opted to go to the hospital. Thursday, September 4 saw officers investigation the theft of a rocking chair off the porch of a Row House. It was the second time the chair had gone missing. Officers made inquiries at a nearby Row House and discovered the chair in the possession of a resident. The resident was advised to leave the chair alone and officers returned it to its rightful place. On Friday, September 5, 2008, officers received a report of a stolen bicycle. The bike was taken from the Townhouse area. A student reported the theft of his wallet on Saturday, September 6, at approximately 2122. The victim said the wallet had been in his room when he went to sleep but was gone when he awoke. At approximately 0315 on Sunday, September 7, 2008, officers received a report of an intoxicated student who had been heard making remarks about harming himself. Officers responded to the student’s residence and spoke with him about the situation. It turned out that the young man was simply distraught over the lack of female companionship and there was no real cause for concern over his well-being. A late night gathering drew the attention of another resident at approximately 0030 on Thursday, September 11. The anonymous resident complained about the noise and officers responded to the Village to deal with the situation. Upon investigation, officers, along with the RA Staff, discovered five individuals in a room with numerous empty containers of an alcoholic beverage, along with some that were still full. Officers ordered the subjects involved to dispose of the remaining alcohol by pouring it out, which they did. The incident, due to the cooperative nature of the subjects, was then turned over to the campus disciplinary system. On Friday, September 12, 2008, officers assisted the Area Coordinator of a resident hall deal with the presence of a non-student who had been living in one of the rooms. The suspect was advised that she could remain for the night but was not to return after that or she would be charged with trespassing. A missing roommate drew the attention of the PSD officers on Saturday, September 13. The apparently missing student’s roommates and RA contacted Public Safety to report that they had not seen their roommate since Thursday, September 11th. After an investigation, officers were able to locate the missing roommate and advised her to contact both her roommates and her family because they were worried about her. The RA staff of the Village requested the assistance of officers on Friday, September 19 at approximately 2358 with an alcohol violation. The RA staff had the situation under control by the time officers arrived. All alcohol present was ordered poured out and the subjects were turned over to the campus disciplinary system. And finally, on September 21, 2008, at approximately 0715, officers received a complaint of some potentially objectionable graffiti having been placed on the sidewalks in front of the Cisler Center and between Cisler and Brady Hall. While not profane in nature, the graffiti was political and deemed to be insensitive. Officers spoke with the graffiti artist and advised him that before he continued his efforts, he needed to obtain the permission of a member of the Campus Life office. In addition to the above actions, the Public Safety Office handled the following routine activities: 167 room admits, 159 weapons escorts, and 17 motorist assists. Officers also investigated 2 vehicle accidents, 9 alarms, and assisted maintenance with 9 problems of varying types. The department also handled 38 reports of lost, found, or recovered property. The Director of the Public Safety Department, along with the entire staff, would like to extend a belated welcome back to all members of the campus community. We would also like to advise the community that there may be times when there is not a dispatcher on duty for the department. This will result in calls being transferred to the officer’s radio. If you call the department and hear what you believe to be an answering machine, please understand that you are speaking with a person via a radio link. Pause a few seconds before you speak and the officer will be able to assist you. Public Safety Tip of the Week: Please remember to keep your vehicles and rooms secured. We do our best to patrol the residence halls and parking lots but we cannot be present at all times. Help us to protect you. Secure your belongings whenever you are not present.
