Most people know that February is Black History Month, and some people are even aware that September is National Hispanic Heritage Month; however, few people are familiar with the fact that March is National Women’s History Month, and has been since 1981. Well, sort of. See, way back in 1981, the United States Congress passed a decree that set up a National Women’s History WEEK, which was to be honored in the month of March. It did not actually become National Women’s History MONTH until six years later. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (0) |

For around 200 Lake State Students, MILoan has been a friend. An ally, a trusted companion. Or, at least, if those are the sort of words one might attribute to a loan company. As the only alternative loan company available to LSSU students that offered a fixed interest rate, it has been the loan company of choice for many, and the one most strongly suggested by the experts in the Financial Aid Department. Unfortunately, that option has been taken away, and any student who was counting on the program to supply their funds for the new school year will find themselves looking for another ally in the war against college costs. Bettas truly are the perfect college kid fish; cheap, low maintenance, hardy, they don’t take too much space and bettas eat just about any fish food. It is interesting that most people still neglect their Betta to the point of death, especially since it is the only fish that they have. Well, after some research into some of the myths that get thrown around about betta, I have prepared a guide for keeping a truly healthy betta. The Student Organization for Diversity (SOFD) kicked off their Anti-Hate campaign last week. On Thursday, February 21st, they were in the Galley during Galley Plus; on Friday, February 22nd, they wrapped the on-campus portion of the campaign outside the Quarterdeck. The campaign, which was intended for students to pledge to help end hate in their lives, was met with mixed reactions. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (0) |

February is a month for romance and a month for celebrating black history. On the last day of February, I’d like to give a brief celebration of both through a special event that happened on this day, 68 years ago. On February 29, 1940, Bob Hope hosted the Oscars for the first time (He would go on to host the Oscars at least 20 more times). It was the 13th annual awards ceremony and the romantic film Gone with the Wind absolutely swept the evening. And Hattie McDaniel won Best Supporting Actress, making her the first African American performer to receive an Academy Award. Gone with the Wind also took Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Art direction, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Outstanding Production, and Best Screenplay.
