Winter is just around the corner, and the snow is coming soon. Everyone knows that winter means heavy coats, boots, gloves and hats to be able to keep from becoming too cold but those four pieces of clothing barely scratch the surface on what could be done to help you prepare for winter. Around this time of September in the year 1620, the Mayflower departed for what is now, the United States. It is imperative for us to consider this fact – if a ship departs for another continent in mid-September, those on the ship must anticipate that they won’t arrive until the dead of winter. From this, then, we can understand that the pilgrims really must have wanted to get out of Holland, a place that they had already fled to because they felt uncomfortable with the political and religious environment in Plymouth, England. Consider the fact that over half of the people on the voyage died of famine, disease, and starvation. One has to wonder what was so distasteful about Holland that it would drive a group of religious separatists to a treacherous, cold, disease-ridden, predominantly fatal voyage to a continent that had had only one (partially) successful colonization previously – Jamestown. Its college and most people at college are concerned about the usual things: schoolwork, making friends, and finding hookups or keeping relationships; but no one should forget about the basic precautions that should be taken to make sex safer. Sex can be dangerous to anyone’s future if they do not take certain safety measures. It’s that time of year again, is it not? That time of year when we all have to come to grips with the inadequacies of our hardware setups, our electronic gadgets, and our software. Who among us can say that they have not railed against the computer gods because the software simply refuses to bend to their will? What can one do against such diabolical forces as the slow internet connection, long load time, or any other of the hordes of little technological demons that haunt the lives of those of us bound to the use of man’s most versatile (both in functions and in malfunctions) device? Every year students that attend Lake State can pick from a variety of pictures for the back of their Student ID’s. These pictures include the American and Canadian Flags, a fire science picture, Crawford Hall, sports teams at LSSU such as the hockey team, a fall scene, and many more. This year though, students had the option of picking an ID picture that many thought was interesting, and many, just strange: a Unicorn Hunters License. People though however had no idea why these were available to them, or what the Unicorn hunters were all about. Little do they know, the Unicorn Hunters were a group created here on our own campus.
