In keeping with a nearly decade long tradition, women from the Sigma Lambda Sigma sorority held a 48-hour vigil to collect money and non-perishable goods in front of Glen’s Market this past weekend.

Aptly termed “Box It”, the tradition was started by the sorority to recreate what it would feel like for a homeless man or woman to inhabit a box as their home, and create awareness of that in the community. Members of the sorority camped out on the sidewalk near Glen’s from 3 p.m. Friday until 3 p.m. Sunday, using boxes, blankets and coats to stay warm during the overnight hours, when temperatures dipped below 40.

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY was the site of the third and final debate between Democratic Presidential Nominee, Barack Obama and Republican Nominee, John McCain. If the debate had to be summed up in one word, it would be “intense.” Bob Schieffer moderated the debate and asked intriguing questions that centered on the category of domestic policy If John McCain came out slow at the last debate and he wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice. McCain’s game plan consisted of smashing Obama’s economic policy and Obama continued to link McCain’s policies to that of George Bush. McCain was particularly harsh on the Obama’s tax policies. When asked why he thinks why his tax plan is more effective, McCain answered, “We have to have short term fixes and long term fixes.” Obama responded by saying, “The financial rescue plan is an important first step. Let’s focus on jobs. Let’s help families right away.” Both candidates detailed further how they are going to implement their individual tax plans.

The Electoral College – How It Works! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Abigail Faber
Friday, 24 October 2008

So here we are again, election time, and many of us have no idea how the process of electing our new president works, more specifically, the Electoral College.  The election process is divided into four stages: the pre-nomination phase, the national conventions, the general election campaign, and the Electoral College.  The process of electing a president is a long process, but the most important, and most difficult to understand, is the Electoral College.  The Electoral College is based on a popular vote, put in by the citizens of the United States of America, and electoral votes, put in by the electors of each State.  Every state has a number of electors equal to its number of U.S. senators, 2 for each state, and U.S. representatives.  The number of U.S. representatives for each state varies, as it is based on population.  The Electoral College currently includes 538 members, 3 of which represent Washington D.C., under the Twenty-Third Amendment of 1961.  The other 535 members include one for each senator and representative.    The process of choosing electors is never simultaneous, as each state has its own way of deciding electors.  The most common however are by State party convention, and by State party committee.
