The term ‘genocide’ was first used by Raphael Lemkin in 1944, when he combined the Latin words ‘genos’ which means race, and ‘cide’ which means killing. Genocide is defined by the United Nations as acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, an ethic, racial, or religious group. The world is currently turning a figurative blind eye to the genocide taking place in the Darfur region of the Sudan, as it has turned a blind eye many times in the past to much worse atrocities. There are many places to fulfill a persons needs here in the Sault Ste. Marie one just has to know where to look. Knowing that there are many musicians attending LSSU, we decided to take a look at two places where you can attain musical growth. The two music stores in town are Grooves and Steve’s. Alan Greenspan has been around for a long time, and the influence that he has exerted over world leaders over the past fifty years is astounding. In his newest book The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World, the former Federal Reserve Chairman lets readers into the private life of a ridiculously intelligent, powerful man. Sometimes the pages are filled with what would seem like egotistical name-dropping, but how is it egotistical when it is simply one’s life? In one chapter Greenspan described a birthday party that then girlfriend Barbara Walters held for him, with the guest list including Henry and Nancy Kissinger, Oscar and Annette de la Renta, Brooke Astor, Joe and Estee Lauder, and David Rockefeller. The U.S. Supreme Court is currently hearing a case that may become landmark in the death penalty debate. In Baze v. Rees, Ralph Baze and co-plaintiff Thomas Clyde Bowling are challenging John Rees, the commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Corrections. They claim that the death penalty constitutes cruel and unusual punishment under the eighth amendment. Thirty-seven out the thirty-eight states that have a legalized death penalty primarily use lethal injection, so the Court’s decision has drastic potential.
