April 8, 2008 Dear Editor, I’ve been asked by a number of our student leaders to address the matter of the overspending of SAM funds allocated to the Programming Board for 2007-2008. In a previous issue of The Compass, the paper printed a letter from Michelle Thalacker that provided both an explanation and her sincere apologies regarding the matter. This matter has also been discussed at a number of open meetings of the Student Government, in meetings of the Big Seven and in meetings with many of our student leaders and representatives. Since the situation surfaced, Michelle has been working to address the matter as have some student leaders (most notably, Amy Chrispell and Doug Anger). Aside from making sure that we fully understand the current situation and how it evolved, we have been working on both immediate action and solutions, and implementing procedures at all levels to prevent this from happening again. To the Editor:
I am writing in response to the Prosecutor for the Student Body’s letter, published in last Friday’s Compass. Someone who claims to represent the concerns of the student body should reconsider attempting to do so at four o’clock in the morning. I found the letter to be shockingly unprofessional and vaguely threatening in a Godfather-esque way, as if Mr. Petkus claims the power to make or break whomever he wishes. Has Mr. Petkus taken any surveys to find the opinions of the student body for whom he claims to advocate? Has he collected any hard data to support his stance that every student at LSSU stands behind his posturings? I, for one, was never asked for my opinion concerning whether I wish to see Ms. Thalacker’s “head on a platter” because of her mistake with the activities budget this year ( I do not). From what I can determine Ms. Thalacker has made an unintentional mistake that she is working to remedy. Mr. Petkus’ call for her destruction, “metaphorically speaking” or otherwise, is ridiculously overwrought. Perhaps Mr. Petkus should, (on behalf of the student body, of course), challenge Ms. Thalacker to a sword fight or a joust on horseback. Those methods would certainly be comparable to his current practices of logical diplomacy. How many gay, lesbian, transgender, or bi-sexual people do you know? Surprisingly, it may be a higher number than you realize. Why is this? Typically it is a taboo topic- one that, when actually discussed, is met with opposition, fear, anger, and hatred. So how could you expect these individuals to be open about their sexuality? For those of you who don’t know who I am, I am the current operational manager of Student Government. From what I have heard at meetings and around the campus regarding the Activities Board overspending, I see that some people are looking at this problem in the wrong order.
