To the readers of the Compass newspaper and to the students of Lake Superior State University, my name is Eric Ciarkowski. I have been elected to serve as the Student Government President for the Student Assembly and I write to you today to clarify to you what has been so vaguely represented of me. Do not take to heart the letter to the editor written in last week’s compass by “Robert Wintour”, which has targeted me as being “not of a good quality.” Though, I cannot confirm that he is not an informed person, I will confirm that there are unmistakable misunderstandings throughout his letter. It is truly a sad day to see those I have trusted and respected over the last two years fall into the gaps and crevasses of cynicism. In my two years as a representative, my first under a committee lead by Ms. Burmeister herself, I have never seen something so publicly unethical as what has been written about myself. What solid evidence claims me as detriment to the integrity, legitimacy, and autonomy of the position of Student Government President? Have I spent my time as a student of this University aimlessly, leaving destruction in my path? No, I have explored the frontiers of the other student organizations, come to know more of the faculty, and discussed at length the needed changes facing the students next year. I have no confidence in Eric Ciarkowski’s ability to serve as Student Government President next year. I severely question his level of commitment and competency; and the fact that he’s not here tonight, the last meeting before the gavel is turned over to him, only reinforces my concerns. Mr. Ciarkowski may be the next most experienced member of this body, but his experience and his ability go not together. In his two years on Student Government, he’s not once demonstrated a leader’s attitude: an attitude of problem-solving and follow-through.
