To the Editor,

The Eastern entrance to the University, years ago, held a sign proclaiming to every undergraduate student entering the campus; “Enter to Learnm Go Forth to Serve”, in stark black letters against a plain white background. The values extolled in these seven simple words, and the sign itself, seem to be missing if a recent visit to campus and a casual conversation with a current undergraduate are any indication. In the place of heartfelt service there appears to be a rush to whatever cause célèbre will, hopefully, catch the attention of the reader of a résumé accompanying an application to a graduate program, doctoral program, or other choice of furthering one’s education.
“The hallmark of a liberal arts education”, Professor Margaret Howe used to remind us weekly in the drafty rooms of old South Hall, “is preparing you for life not only in the context of your nine to five career but also in your five to nine life of appreciation of the humanities, involving youtself in service, and leaving the world a better place than when you arrived”. The Shouldice library displays portraits of those Distinguished Professors, both past and present, who personify the adage of being remembered for things done in the service of others rather than the things done as self promotion. The portraits, and those seven simple words, should serve as a daily reminder to look to the needs of others and, hopefully, place sacrifice for greater good over the need for recognition for the individual.
Many valuable lessons are learned in the world of undergraduate education at Lake Superior State and the message gained in passing that sign day after day has served me well over the years. Modern mission statements drafted by committees, slogans provided by consultants, and résumé by following cause after fashionable cause may have their place but great ideas, historically, seem to be simple, direct, and effective. If the sign cannot be replaced I would challenge the Compass to print those seven wonderful words as a banner in each issue of the paper as a reminder of the obligation that accompanies the privilege of education. “Enter to learn. Go Forth to Serve”. I can think of no better challenge to to students currently enrolled as undergraduates at Lake Superior State University.

About Searchmont PDF Print E-mail

As most of you know the annual searchmont trip is planned for February 7th of this year. This is a trip that many students look forward to attending every year but this year there has been some controversy about how much money was spent on this trip. There are three separate reasons why there is controversy: Student government requested and received the money from the discretionary funding committee (DFC), some people feel that the amount of money spent doesn’t match the turnout of students, and the activities board (separate of student government) student activities board (committee on student government) can not find a middle ground to work on.

Throw Out the MCA! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Rebecca Secrest

This month human rights organizations all over the world have a dismal fact to report: The Military Commissions Act has been enacted for a year, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon. All interested students are encouraged to read this act- it will make you reach for your driver’s license to make sure that you are still living in the United States.

The United States has, for several decades, followed the Geneva Conventions. They are called Conventions because there are four of them, and all determine humane treatment for specific individuals in times of war. The first two concern medical personnel, the third prisoners of war, and the fourth, civilians. The interesting thing about the Geneva Conventions is that in order for the conventions to apply under international law, the prisoner must be classified as one of those three categories. So what does the MCA do? It gives prisoners who would normally be defined as POWs a new name that has no recognition in international law- “Unlawful Enemy Combatant”. There are no laws or conventions regarding unlawful enemy combatants because the term is brand new. Also, it is the government’s prerogative to determine who falls under the U.E.C category, it is not the decision of a court.

To The Editor, Students, Faculty, and Staff of Lake State:

First, the Public Safety Department would like to apologize to the Compass Staff for the delay in this response to Ms Halliday’s letter.  The delay was caused by an investigation into the allegations raised in her letter.

This investigation included a review of the number of citations being issued, comparing this year with previous years.  In all actuality, the number of citations that have been issued has decreased in comparison to two years ago.

The Entertainment Value of Ignorance PDF Print E-mail

I watch way too much television.

Last week, I was enjoying a marathon of shows in the “World’s Blankiest Blank” genre (as Fry from the cartoon “Futurama” calls it).  This particular blanky blank was “Outrageous Television Moments”.  The producers of this show apparently didn’t even have the budget to run their clips in front of an actual group of living human beings, so everything was backed up by a hearty “can o’ laughter,” but that wasn’t the problem I had with the show.
