The process beings with donor registration, which includes: name, address, phone number, and a few other things.  Then, identification must be shown.  The donor then has a pre-donation screening, which includes questions about your heath, lifestyle and disease risk factor.  Next, an employee will perform a small heath exam.  Iron levels then have to be taken. This is done through a slight prick on the index finger.  Finally it is time for the donor to give blood. The donor lies down on a table, and their arm is cleaned and sterilized.  About one unit of blood, which is about one pint is drawn out; this process takes from 6-10 minutes.  Food was available for the donors in the canteen area.  In past years, the food was usually cookies and juice but this year there was pizza for the donors to munch on.    

In the population only about 5% of people donate blood.  Everyone that is capable of giving blood should.  The main reason why people don’t give blood is they don’t like or are afraid of needles; but nearly everyone feels that way.  The most pain donors feel is a slight pinch.  Betty Yanna said, “No pain whatsoever. Pleasant feeling.”  Donors have to wait at least 56 days from their last donation, before they are eligible to donor again..  Most people can give blood the minimum age is 17, and there is no maximum age. People who donate blood could be saving the life of an accident victim, a cancer patient, or even a premature baby.

If anybody missed this blood drive there are three others coming to LSSU this year.   Remember blood is always needed.
