This fall, we humble employees of the Compass, decided that we would start something new, a sort of tribute to those hardworking personnel of this University who don’t get much of the attention, the ones who work behind the scenes – or in plain sight – and who don’t always get a whole lot of recognition for the work they do. People, in the words of one Compass staff member: “You just don’t want to mess with.”
Our first inductee into the Behind the Scenes Hall of Fame is someone just about anyone who has ever eaten in the Quarterdeck will be familiar with – Colleen Kinghorn. Colleen is the friendly lady with the ID “swiper” that takes your meal tickets one by one as you walk into LSSU’s realm of the full and home of the fed. Colleen is married with two children – boys, 31 and 25. She has worked at LSSU for ten years, with only a brief hiatus due to illness. She worked in the kitchen for a time, but she’s been doing what she does now for almost that whole time. She says she doesn’t always see everything, but “I hear a lot of interesting things... students talking as they walk in, lots of interesting things indeed” - one can only imagine how many conversations must sound even odder without the proper context. “I love my job, and the students too” she said on Monday, “and you can put that in the paper.” (We did, don’t worry) When asked if there was any quote she would like to be recorded as saying, she immediately responded with “If you’re not willing to do something about something, don’t complain about it. You can put that in the paper too.” No worries there either. Colleen can be found in the Quarterdeck at lunch and dinner almost every weekday – always up for a chat. Add as favourites (0)
