Great Lake State weekend is always one of the most exciting – and crowded - times of an academic year at LSSU. For those who aren’t familiar with it, it is the weekend when parents are invited to the University to tour the campus and familiarize themselves with what goes on here, and it will be taking place from October 19-21 this fall. Each year the campus seems to put together an even better package for the parents than they did the previous, and there are an impressive number of events taking place within the weekend, from the alumni awards reception to an ice cream social to a planetarium presentation to a carnival with free food and games to the parents’ brunch in the Quarter Deck. There is even an exhibition hockey game between the Lakers and Western Ontario taking place on October 20th, which visitors are encouraged to attend, as well as a performance in the Arts Center by acapella group elmoTHUMM.
For the second consecutive year, Great Lake State Weekend is coinciding with Fall Fling, an entirely separate event that allows High School juniors to visit the campus for an informational open house and essentially do the same things that parents will be doing for GLSW. Because LSSU is a relatively small campus, some disagree with the idea of holding these two events at the same time, believing that the number of campus guests becomes overwhelming and neither group ends up receiving the attention that they deserve, but the contrary arguments have proved victorious. Susan Fitzpatrick, who is director of Alumni Relations at LSSU, said that “We like to have the juniors at LSSU when there are other events going on because that allows them to see our campus and get a good idea of what we have to offer.” Before Fitzpatrick had starting working in the Alumni office last year, Admissions had been requesting that GLSW and Fall Fling be scheduled together, but the request had been denied. They requested again when Fitzpatrick was hired, and she agreed with the idea. Interestingly enough, what is now Great Lake State Weekend was itself at one point two events – Alumni weekend and family weekend – and as Great Lake Sate Weekend it has almost always proven successful. For Fitzpatrick and others, the more activity that is going on at LSSU the better and it is worth the challenge of accommodating so many visitors. Add as favourites (0)
