Thursday, October 4th 2007 saw the return of the Career Fair to Lake State.  Forty employers, from healthcare providers, to the American Armed Forces, to law enforcement, to engineering and robotics businesses set up shop in the Superior Room of the Walker Cisler Center from noon to three o’clock.  The event has evolved over the years from a handful of area business representatives sitting in front of paperboard signs to a full-on headhunting expedition, complete with big, bright multimedia displays and all manner of takehome tidbits for the would-be jobseekers.  Pens, pencils, magnets, mugs, keychains, day planners and candy bars sat on every table.

The annual event, which traditionally attracts between 250 and 300 students, is organized and coordinated by LSSU Career Services.  Theresa Weaver and Mary Jo Meehan from Career Services were at the door to welcome the students.  Both feel very strongly about the positive nature of the event, not just for outgoing seniors considering careers, but for underclassmen as well.  “We want ‘em here as freshmen,” Ms. Meehan states.  That a Lake State graduate will enter the workforce with a competitive education is not in question.  For future-minded students, however, there is more to consider.  Taking advantage of the opportunity to make an impact on an industry before graduation day is now more important than ever.  “What’s going to distinguish you from everyone else?” Ms. Weaver asks.  Incoming freshmen are urged to consider summer jobs and internships in their chosen fields.

This is exactly what freshman Tom Whitsel had in mind when he attended.  The communications major was looking to make an impression on future employers and to consider which minors might be most useful to him as he migrates from college into the workforce.  When asked what surprised him most about the event, Tom answered, “The variety.  There were a lot of different things.”  He mentioned specifically being interested in the robotics firms and was impressed with how the Naval recruiter on the scene was able to connect his major to careers within the US Navy.  But to plan for the future, one must remain open to the inevitability of change, and Tom was glad to have found “a little bit of everything so you can find out what catches your fancy.”

For those who may have missed the Career Fair, LSSU Career Services is always available.  They have the line on summer jobs and internships, as well as being able to help students with resume preparation and creating successful jobseeking strategies.  Career Services can be reached at 635-2733, and is located on the lower floor of the Shouldice Library building, across the hall from the Learning Center, in LIB 119A.  Students can also log on to http://www.lssu.edu/careerservices to learn more about Career Services, keep up to date on the career events and workshops happening on campus, and make use of the online career tools offered by the university.
