 To Whom It May Concern:

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Robert Wintour.  I am a student at Lake Superior State University.  I have not been as active in student organizations as I would have liked.  However, I have sat in on Presidents Council and I have read over the Student Constitution and Bill of Rights which I believe I understand both documents well.  However, this is not why I am writing this letter.

The reason why is because of my fear for the upcoming year.  A lot has changed in the following year many of which are good for the Students and the University.  Though, there are some changes that are not of a good quality.

One is that of the new administration on Student Government. I was there at the meeting when Miss. Amanda Burmeister (the previous Secretary of Political Action & University Development on Student Government) read her letter about her concerns on the at the time the future (now present) President of  Student Government, Mr. Eric Ciarkowski.  In which I myself, agree with many of the issues mentioned in that letter.

Then when Mr. Ciarkowski responded to the letter, all he could refer to was how he has proven himself in responsibility, accountability, and leadership.  Which he states he has learned by being the Vice President of Theta Xi, and how he plans all these activities and ideas for Theta Xi for this year.  However, not once in his response did he ever talk about what he is going to do with Student Government or the Student body as a whole.

This leads me to my next point. Mr. Ciarkowski has mentioned many times too many different people around campus on how he wishes to refurbish the Student Constitution, which in that fact I agree with.  I too believe that the Constitution could be a stronger document which will assist us in the future.  However, I believe he is doing it for not the right reasons.

He is stating to that the Inter-Greek Council should receive a higher percent of the SAM fee, which I do not agree with at all.  (The SAM fee is $35 per semester.  This fee was requested by the student government and approved by the Board of Trustees June 30, 2003, to support student government, student activities, the student radio station WLSO, and the student newspaper The Compass.)

I do agree however, that Greek life on campus is a good thing and should happen.  Yet, I do not think that the Non-Greek Students should pay for it and that is why you pay fees to join a fraternity or sorority.  The only reason why the Inter-Greek Council receives a percentage is so that ALL the Greek fraternities or sororities can put on activates TOGETHER for ALL the students i.e. “Greek Week.”  This is why the individual Greek fraternities or sororities have to go to President Council for funding just like every other student organization on campus does.  They are not above or blow the rest of the Organizations so why give them more of the Students money if not all students can use it or have the opportunity to.

Therefore, I am ask myself as a Student of Lake Superior State University, is Mr. Ciarkowski really obligated to myself and the rest of the Students as a whole or just a select few?

Hence I ask Mr. Ciarkowski to ether step up for all students or step down and let someone else become president, who in truth does care about ALL the students!

Sincerely,

Robert Wintour
