Saturday, October 13, 2007 marked the debut of the Cove Nightclub. This event was sponsored by Lake State’s student-run radio station WLSO, and was held in the Cove from 9pm - 12am. At the nightclub, students had the chance to dance the night away in a cigarette/alcohol free environment. Junior Carl Roberson stated that “it is nice to be able to go and enjoy a place that is not filled with cigarette smoke.” The nightclub, which is said to be taking place once a month, is the only nightclub in Sault Sainte Marie, MI that is open for people under the age of 21 on Saturday nights. It is free for LSSU students and guests with their students IDs. The driving force of this idea was brought forward by Justin Wright. Justin said that he came up with the idea last March when he was “stuck on campus with nothing to do and couldn’t go out to a bar or club.” He also went on to say that the “campus is completely dead on Saturday nights so students need something to do, especially those who are under 21.” Making the dream of his nightclub into a reality was not an easy task. Justin spent months trying to get the help he needed to be able to put this nightclub on for students here on campus. His hard work eventually paid off. With the help of WLSO, who provided the necessary equipment, and others, Justin was able to give students an alternative atmosphere, especially welcoming to those who are not in the party scene. Being that the nightclub is on campus, it is more convenient for those who do not have transportation to go elsewhere. Students who went the nightclub also said that they felt “safer”, because of the fact that there wasn’t anyone there who was intoxicated causing trouble. Kevin Kainula, the station manager of WLSO stated that “the turnout was much better than expected and with the help of more advertising we can hopefully expect a better turnout for next time.” Justin and everybody at WLSO are looking forward to the next Cove night, so they can try new things to make the Nightclub a bigger hit. Posters and flyers will be plastered all around campus to make it well known when the next night will be.
