October 2 through 13, 2007 The Lake Superior State University Public Safety Department reports the following activity for the period of October 2 through October 13, 2007: On Wednesday, October 3, 2007, a student employee of the University reported being harassed by an unknown individual while on campus. The employee reported having had to deal with some fellow students at an off campus event. The harassment took the form of a warning that she should “watch her back”. A student reported a suspicious individual on campus on Thursday, October 4, 2007. This individual was reported as riding a bicycle aimlessly around campus and wandering through one of the resident halls. An anxious mother contacted the PSD to check on the well being of her son on October 7, 2007. Officers were able to make contact with the student in question a short time later. Also on Sunday, October 7, officers were contacted about a suspicious individual in the Norris Center. The individual in question had been observed using the facilities several times without producing a valid ID that would allow him to do so. The individual was advised to make sure he had identification with him the next time or he would be removed from the facility. At 0836 on Monday, October 8, 2007, officers were called on to assist a student who had passed out in the library. The student had left class because he wasn’t feeling well and was on his way to the bathroom when he lost consciousness. Officers requested assistance from Sault Fire and EMS and the subject was turned over to personnel from that department. Residents of Moloney Hall appeared to be in a celebratory mood on Tuesday, October 9, 2007. As a result, officers from the PSD paid the residence a visit and found several subjects inside along with several bottles of an alcoholic beverage. Officers advised the subjects that they were in violation of University policy and were going to be written up for the offense. The alcohol was then poured down the drain. A member of the custodial staff reported finding a lens for a light fixture in the Walker Cisler Center damaged at 0500 on October 11, 2007. The custodian was fairly certain that the damage had to be deliberate because the lens was difficult to remove and it was unlikely it would fall out. The incident is under investigation. Another anxious mother contacted the PSD on October 12 with a request that officers make contact with her son and have him call home. Officers delivered the message a short time later. Also on October 12, a student reported finding the tire on her car slashed after she had loaned the car to a friend. The friend stated all tires were fully inflated when she parked the car at approximately 1900. The friend discovered the damaged tire approximately two hours later. Officers completed a trifecta of welfare checks for the week on October 12th when they contacted a third student at the request of a concerned parent. This student was also found to be well and was advised to contact her parents. And finally, on October 13 at approximately 1733 in the evening, a passerby noticed a car on fire in the Norris Center parking lot. Sault Fire was contacted, along with the Sault Police Department and the fire was brought quickly under control. The car was removed from the scene and was reported to be a complete loss. In addition to the above actions, the Public Safety Office handled the following routine activities: 204 weapons escorts, 99 room admits, and 7 motorist assists. We also received 11 lost and found property complainants, investigated three alarms, and assisted maintenance with 6 problems of varying sorts. Public Safety Tip of The Week: Attending a University is often a stressful time for both the student and the parent. As you settle into a routine and begin to enjoy the new freedom afforded to you while on campus, please do not forget those back home who care about you. Call them once in awhile to let them know that you’re alive and well. You may find that you’re glad you did. Add as favourites (0)
