Every year, in the cold and windy, sometimes rainy or snowy weather of late October, the sisters of Alpha Kappa Chi sorority can be seen at the intersection of Ashmun and Spruce Streets, in front of Arfstrom Pharmacy’s parking lot, sitting on a giant teeter-totter. This year, the AKX Annual Teeter-Totter-A-Thon started at 12:00pm on Friday October 19th, and is going for 48 continuous hours, until 12:00pm on Sunday October 21st.

The sisters are not just sitting out on a giant teeter-totter for the fun of it (although who wouldn’t have fun, reminiscing about those old elementary school days?) The girls are out there to raise money for two of their philanthropies, the diabetes foundation and the Diane Peppler Recourse Center.

Last year, the girls raised over $6,000, and hope to meet this year’s goal of $4,500. This goal would have been completely unobtainable if it wasn’t for area businesses generously donating funds to the cause. The girls even have connections downstate, with Mr. and Mrs. Bollin, parents of the late Leah Bollin, and founders of the Leah Marie Bollin Memorial Award. Mr. and Mrs. Bollin’s daughter Leah was a sister of Alpha Kappa Chi, who suffered from epilepsy. The money raised every year would be nowhere near what it has been if it wasn’t for the Bollin’s and their fundraisers.

Although the sisters raised over $6,000 last year, their goal for this year of $4,500 will be difficult to meet without the donations of friends, family, and of course, passersby.

Anyone interested in donating to Alpha Kappa Chi’s causes should stop by the intersection of Ashmun and Spruce in downtown Sault Ste. Marie. The girls welcome all donations; even if donating money is out of the question, the girls will be out in the cold for a long time, and do accept coffee, hot chocolate and food. The sisters of Alpha Kappa Chi are also auctioning off rides on the teeter-totter, for anyone who is interested.
