This weekend introduced the Fall ’07 season of Black Box Theatre to Lake State. This particular performance included two one-act plays and a preview of the touring company’s “Proud Monster” which will be presented at a festival in Detroit late this winter. The Black Box Theatre Company, headed by Gabriella Castillo, held auditions in mid-September and has spent the past seven weeks rehearsing the two one-act plays.

Room 262 of the Arts Center is a room painted entirely black with very few props (a table and a few stools) and no windows. The room is referred to as “the black box” as its primary purpose is to host Black Box Theatre productions. This gave the performance a unique intimacy in that, on opening night, 30 attendants left the theater at least half full.

Directed by Gary Balfantz, the company met for a two hour practice four times a week in order to prepare the show, which came off wonderfully.

The two one-act plays were extremely entertaining, if not a bit mind-boggling. The first play, Lemonade, told the story of two well-acquainted women making up terrible things they wished for themselves and arguing over the imaginary aspects of their lives. It was very funny and well-rehearsed. The second skit was even funnier but more confusing. “I’m Herbert” is a play about an elderly couple, with some obvious memory issues and previous divorces, who argue about which spouse had which child and who went to Venice with whom.

“We had a good show. The show flowed, everyone remembered their cues, it was good, everyone worked together and had a great time,” said Ricky Naida, the assistant director.

The cast will perform again next weekend at 7 pm on Friday and Saturday (November 9 and 10) and at 2 pm on Sunday the 11th. Tickets are available at the door, $5 for LSSU Students (with ID) and $10 for the general public. Seating is limited to 60 people.
