Competing as a team of one against teams of three student programmers, Lake Superior State University student Paul Carley of Sault Ste. Marie took third place at the eighth annual Northern Michigan University Programming Contest held recently in Marquette.

Carley, a senior from Sault Ste. Marie majoring in computer science, and 15 other LSSU students competed in the contest on March 31 with four other universities and 24 teams total.

“We had 16 LSSU students that wanted to compete this year, so I made five teams of three and just put Paul on a team by himself,” said Mark Terwilliger Ph.D., who teaches computer science at LSSU. “For him to finish third is a remarkable effort.”

Student teams had five hours to solve six computer programming problems. Carley tied with the top two teams by solving four of the six problems, but earned the third-place finish based on the time needed to complete the programs.

Three other LSSU teams finished in the top 15 by solving two problems, Terwilliger said.

Paul Bonamy, a senior from Grand Haven majoring in computer mathematical sciences, Andrew Hooker, a senior from Detroit majoring in computer networking, and Jordan Meyer, a senior from Temperance majoring in computer engineering, finished in 12th place, and the team of Andrew Davis, a senior from Gaylord majoring in computer science, Stefanie Nickerson, a senior from Kingsley majoring in computer mathematical sciences, and Jordan Warzecha, a senior from Plymouth majoring in computer science, finished 13th.

The LSSU team of Austin Hicks, a senior from Bremerton, Wash., Josh Laplander, a sophomore from Claremont, Minn., and Dereck Wonnacott, a sophomore from Sault Ste. Marie, all three majoring in computer engineering, ended up in 15th place.

All six LSSU teams finished at least one of the six complex programming problems.
