SAULT STE. MARIE – In their first production for the academic year, Lake Superior State University’s Black Box Ensemble and the Lake State Theatre Company will present two one-act plays, “Lemonade,” and “I’m Herbert,” in November.

Performance dates are 7 p.m. on Nov. 2 and 2 p.m. on Nov. 3-4, and then 7 p.m. on Nov. 9-10 and 2 p.m. on Nov. 11.

All performances will be presented in the LSSU Black Box Theatre in room 262 of the Arts Center. Tickets, $5 for all students with ID and $10 general admission, are available at the door, only. Seating is limited!

In “Lemonade,” by James Prideaux, two matrons of Peoria seek respite from the doldrums of middle age by setting up lemonade stands on a busy highway.  The dialogue is brisk and hilarious as they trade drinks and fantasies that they have concocted to brighten their dull existence. This production features Keri Miller, a senior history major from Barbeau, and Alexandria Sullivan, a junior psychology major from Sault Ste. Marie.

In “I’m Herbert,” by Robert Anderson, two elderly people sit on a porch in a pair of rocking chairs and just chat. Each character has had one or more previous marriages and perhaps a few flings, but they are not quite clear about the details. In truth, they aren’t always sure who is who. This production features Stacy Charbonneau, a senior French studies major from Sault Ste. Marie and Kevin White  a freshmen majoring in Athletic training from Sault Sainte Marie.

The pair of performances will include a sneak preview of the festival production that students will present at Oakland Community College and the Eastern Michigan University Performance Festival in February 2008.

The Black Box Ensemble is dedicated to the presentation of non-dramatic literature, storytelling, performance art and installation work using non-traditional approaches and techniques.

“In recent years, the Black Box Theatre has been recognized for its intimate performance venue,” said Gary L. Balfantz Ph.D., director of the production and chair of LSSU’s Dept. of English and Communication. “The ensemble’s previous productions, ‘A Small Good Thing’ and ‘Incident at Thompson’s Slough and Other Stories,’ have played to sold-out houses. I’m sure the comedy and satire of ‘Lemonade’ and ‘I’m Herbert’ should prove to be just as entertaining and riveting.”
