On Saturday night, the Lake State Arts Center hosted Back of the Moon. The band is a group of traditional Scottish folk musicians from Scotland. The concert was the result of join efforts from Lake State and WCMU Radio’s “Our Front Porch”: a program on WCMU Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm featuring traditional music concerts.

The show was extremely well-received. Audiences filled the entire Auditorium. Public Safety helped direct traffic and maintain order at the performance. The audiences joined in singing a few rounds with the band and the band was given a standing ovation and then came back for a three-song encore. A crowd favorite was Hamish Napier’s step dancing routine. WCMU was recording the performance to broadcast as its “Our Front Porch” presentation.

Performing together since 2000, the band has released 3 albums, the most recent being “Luminosity”. The original members of the band met when they were introduced as the finalists of BBC Radio 2 Young Folks Awards. Gillian Frame plays violin and performs vocals, Hamish Napier plays piano, sings vocals, step dances, and plays Irish flute, Findlay Napier joined the group later and plays guitar, Ali Hutton replaced Simon McKerrell and plays tin whistles and bagpipes. Since then they have earned several awards including “Best Up and Coming Act” and “Best Folk Band” from the Scottish Traditional Music Awards, “Best Celtic Group” by the Lorient Interceltic Festival, and “Album of the Week” on BBC Radio Scotland.

What is perhaps most incredible about this band is the versatility of each member. Throughout the performance, Ali Hutton played three pipes, a set of bagpipes and did back-up vocals. Hamish Napier performed vocals, piano, wooden (Irish) flute, and even did some step dancing.

The band was headed to perform their second gig at “The Arc” in Ann Arbor on Sunday.
