The Lake Superior State University Public Safety Department reports the following activity for the period November 11 through November 25, 2007:

Officers on patrol on Sunday, November 11, were informed that several fire extinguishers had been tampered with in Brady Hall.  Officers checked the building and discovered that the seals on several of the extinguishers had been removed.  This incident remains under investigation.

A vehicle parked in S Lot without being properly registered on campus came to the attention of PSD officers on Monday, November 12.  The vehicle had plates which did not match the valid parking permit that was on the windshield.  It also had in excess of 10 outstanding parking citations.  Given the on-going, repetitive nature of the parking violation, officers decided to bring the owner to the attention of the disciplinary process on campus in order to gain compliance with the parking regulations.

A concerned mother contacted the PSD on Tuesday, November 13, concerned about the well-being of her son.  She stated that her son had been ill and she was having trouble reaching him.  She requested a well-being check.  The young man was not in his residence but roommates stated that he was well enough to attend classes.

A student attending classes in the Library observed a subject with his dog inside the building.  Officers investigated and discovered that the dog belonged to an adjunct member of the faculty, who was informed that employees are not allowed to have their dogs in University buildings.

Another animal complaint reached the PSD on Wednesday, November 14.  This one was due to two large dogs that were being allowed to walk on campus without being properly leashed.  The dogs were accompanied by their person, who was approximately 20 yards behind them.  He put the dogs in a vehicle, which brought the matter to a close.

A resident of the Row reported damage to her vehicle on Saturday, November 17th.  She stated that someone had bent the antenna on her vehicle.  The incident remains under investigation.

Also on Friday, November 17th, officers rendered aid to a young man who was struck in the head by the leg of a metal folding chair while attending the hockey game.  The child had a small bump on the head and was turned over to Sault Fire and Rescue.

An unexpected guest staying in an apartment in the Student Village garnered the attention of PSD officers when they received a report of his presence on campus.  Officers investigated the situation and discovered that the four-footed canine guest would be leaving in the morning.  He was allowed to remain for that amount of time.

An early morning call from a member of the custodial staff on Saturday, November 18th prompted an inspection of the mechanical room in the Student Athletic Center.  The custodial worker reported a ‘hot’ smell.  Officers noticed a temperature difference in the gauges on the equipment and contacted the heating plant with the information.

An off- campus child care program contacted the PSD on Monday, November 19th with a request to have a message delivered to a student.  Her son had become ill while at the child care site.  Officers made contact with the mother and she headed out to take care of her son.

Finally, on Tuesday, November 20th, members of the grounds crew turned a device into the PSD that they found while cleaning C Lot.  The device, a Full Throttle energy drink can, had been altered for use as a device for smoking illicit substances.  The “bong” is currently being stored at the Public Safety Office, where the owner may claim it, if he or she so desires.

In addition to the above actions, the Public Safety Office handled the following routine activities:  234 weapons escorts, 122 room admits, and 4 motorist assists.  We also received 31 lost and found property complainants, investigated 8 alarms, assisted maintenance with 5 problems, and investigated 1 vehicle accident.

Public Safety Tip of The Week:  With the advent of winter, please remember to use common sense when driving.  Roads that look wet may actually be icy.  An extended driving time is better than not arriving at all.
