Dear Editor, I am writing as a student concerned for the safety of all those who attend, work at, or visit Lake Superior State University. It has come to my attention lately that certain Public Safety officers are waging a little bet with one another. A “let’s set a new record for amount of parking tickets issued” sort of bet. I realize that this little “bet” may all be a rumor. However, I have heard it from several sources of varying degrees of reliability. This alone leads me to believe that there may be a little bit of fact behind this accusation. Now, I’m all for fun and games. However, there are several things at stake here. First of all, twenty-five dollars, which we all know is a lot for most students. Secondly, the ability to register for classes. And finally, access to transcripts after graduation. With all this at stake, this little bet creates a really big problem. Now, I understand that it is the responsibility of Public Safety officers to issue parking tickets. However, this is not a game to be played. Mo money and ability to graduate should not and will not be compromised because they have nothing better to do than drive around looking for cars to ticket. According to the past few issues of The Compass, there have been some reports of “suspicious individuals” roaming campus, several harassment cases, and quite a few instances of damage to personal or university property. As a student, I want to know what the Public Safety Department is doing to prevent these things from happening. If they are aimlessly driving around just looking for the next vehicle to issue a ticket to, then they obviously cannot be working to stop other issues that pose a real potential threat to the students, staff, and faculty of Lake Superior State University. For this reason, I feel it is necessary that everyone concerned with the well-being og those associated with our university are aware of this problem. I look forward to and expect a reply from the Public Safety Department denying all this information. However, what else would be expected? It satisfies me enough to know that these words are out there for everyone to read and take appropriate action.
