The women’s basketball team is the only varsity Lake Superior State team not to boast a losing record. Coming off a strong win over 1-0 Kentucky Wesleyan to improve to a 2-1 start for the year, the Ladies attempted to continue their success, on what is likely going to be a great year for LSSU women’s basketball, against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at Ferris State University during the GLIAC vs. GLVC challenge.
The first points of the game were scored by SIUE forward Lindsey Rujawitz, who finished with 11 points and 7 boards. The first half could only be described as a back and forth half. It featured 2 ties and 5 lead changes. Neither team led by more than 6 points, and combined for 14 turnovers. The first half stats for both teams looked similar. They both shot 50% from the free throw line, and a low 40% from the field. The major difference was the 3pt percentage were the Lakers shot an appalling 28.6% on 4-14 shooting. SIUE shot a mediocre 3-7 from behind the arch. The Lakers led by a point at the half, 29-28. Holding off a short surge by SIUE, the Lakers went on a 23-7 run sparked by a three-pointer by Shalyn Beauchamp that put the Lakers up 43-55. This run was offset by SIUE’s run of 18-6 which tied the game at 61. Tied with 7 seconds in the game Amber Shelton scored her twentieth points of the game to give SIUE the lead. On an impressive buzzer- beater by Shalyn Beauchamp sent the game into overtime. After a back and forth five minutes, SIUE took the lead and won the game, 78-74. Shalyn Beauchamp finished with 19 and added 7 assists with only 2 turnovers as she played 41 of a possible 45 minutes. Freshman Katherine LaPrairie had another solid game off the bench and scored 12 points with 4 boards and 2 assists. Allison Jaynes added 12 as well with 5 boards. SIUE’s leading scorer was Amber Shelton with 24 points. The Lady Lakers play their next home game Saturday the first against Grand Valley State University. Add as favourites (0)
