After starting 2-1 on the season, the LSSU Lady Lakers lost two games in a row, including a heart breaker against SIUE in overtime; the Lady Lakers fell to 2-3 and hoped that the home court advantage would be the spark that they would need to get past the tough Grand Valley State University team.

The Lady Lakers were not only playing for their team, but for the pride of their school. LSSU winter sports teams have combined for a 4-19 start to their respective seasons, 11 of the losses came from the hockey team. The Lady Lakers had been the only winter sports team that had had a winning record this year, making them the elite team in the school.

In this game they did not play like an elite team though. GVSU quickly pounced on the Lady Lakers and never gave them a chance. They started the game out with 6-0 run that kept the Lakers scoreless for the first five minutes of the game, as the Lakers missed 6 shots in a row. While both teams shot horribly from the field, GVSU 34%; LSSU 28%, the Lakers only scored on 7 field goals in the first half of play, almost giving the lead to GVSU. The LSSU Lakers made a stand around the 10 minute marks and started keeping the game somewhat close, only trailing by 9 at the end of the half.

GVSU took advantage of some missed opportunities of LSSU and again kept them scoreless for the first 5 minutes of play, when they had amassed 22 point deficit.

Almost as if to make up for the pathetic first quarter shooting, LSSU shot a good 50% from the field including shooting almost 60% from the three point line, but still only shot 50% from the free throw line.

Katherine LaPrairie continued her excellent start to the year by scoring 13 points off the bench for LSSU. Fellow freshman Shelle Rochon had a team high 15 points. The Lakers got production from the bench as they scored 46 of the Lakers 66 points.

GVSU had 4 players in double digits for scoring. Crystal Zick had 19.

As the trip at home continues, they will try to defend the home court against Gannon, Mercyhurst, and Ferris State, and hopefully improve their losing record.
