My project as an Americorps Vista is to build and coordinate a satellite volunteer center on the campus of LSSU. It is my mission to weave a passion for service into the fabric of our campus. By working with faculty, staff and students I am creating connections and volunteer opportunities for the benefit of our campus, our community, and everyone involved. There is already a great tradition of volunteerism on campus; it is my goal to create opportunities to touch every student on campus that wants to make a difference. Some students will be involved in service learning as a part of their curriculum, and find they receive much more than they give and turn volunteerism from an assignment to a lifelong endeavor. Other students, like those involved with the sororities and fraternities already do service projects in our community, and I will be serving them simply by finding new and innovative ways for them to continue what they already know is important. College students may sometimes be looked over as important givers to our community, but their contribution can be tremendous. Great things are already happening. For example, Alpa Phi Omega; a service oriented national fraternity has just recently opened a local chapter on campus and looks forward to working closely with the volunteer center. In February, LSSU took part in a state wide organ donation campaign in which many of the universities in Michigan competed to see who could get the most students, staff and faculty to put their name on the donor registry. We got a great response and LSSU ranked sixth in the state. Another great success story is emerging from a service project from one of our resident advisors. She held a competition amongst her residents in one of the resident halls to see who could collect the most school supplies for Iraqi children. The response we received was better than we could have hoped. Ann Jakaitis, the mother of our star goalie for our LSSU hockey team heard about this service project and sent over two huge boxes of school supplies to be sent out. Between the contributions of Ms. Jakaitis, some of the offices on campus and LSSU residents, we will be sending over enough school supplies to run several classes for a year. All this has taken place and the volunteer center has only been open for 3 months. I am excited about what this means for LSSU and our community. I am looking forward to providing even more opportunities and watching where the students go with them. It’s going to be a great year! Add as favourites (0)
