The Lake State Men’s basketball team continued their struggles on Saturday as they hosted Number 2 ranked Grand Valley State University in their home opener, 78-61.

Being the first home game of the season, many fans showed up to give their support. “It was fun. We lost, but it was fun.” Said Sophmore Kassandra Numan, which goes to shows that fans will weather any storm to support their boys in blue.

A storm it has been though too. The basketball team host posted a horrific of 0-6, losing all of their games in blowouts, with exception for the first match-up of the season where they only lost by 2. Neglecting the first game they have lost them all this year by an average of about 15 points. Not only have they been blown out this season, but never led in their last three games, and they have only put up an average of 67 points a game. Their opponents have averaged close to 80 points a game.

In the first half the games tempo was set early. The GVSU Lakers, which beat nationally ranked Michigan State earlier in the year, took a quick start and already had a lead of 10 points a little over 5 minutes into the game. Jason Jamerson had a quick 5 points and a steal in that span.

The LSSU Lakers were torn apart in the first half as they eventually trailed by more than 20 points at numerous times in the first half. GVSU found a way to shoot hot against LSSU and shot over 50% from the field taking more than 33 shots in the first half, and close to 50% from behind the arc, which has proven to be a weak spot in the LSSU defense in recent games.

When the first half was said and done, LSSU was down by 18 points.

The beginning of the second half showed some hope from the boys in blue as they quickly cut the deficit to only 13 points, but that was as close as they would get as GVSU walked all over them for the next 17 punishing minutes of basketball.

Starter Tim VanOudheusden led the LSSU Lakers in shooting, scoring and grabbed a massive 5 offensive rebounds in the effort against GVSU, he only had 1 turnover. Ryan Kuhl and Scott Perkins both put up 10 points for the LSSU Lakers. The Lakers continued their hot shooting from the free throw line as they shot over 80% in this game, and have shot 75% on the season.

Callistus Eziukwu had a monstrous game for GVSU as he scored 14 points grabbed 9 boards, and had 5 blocked shots. Jason Jamerson had a team high 23 points and 4 three pointers for GVSU.
