Winter is a time of year that brings with it many outdoor activities such as skiing, sledding, and just playing in the snow. Although this may be a fun time, it can also be a dangerous one too, especially when you are on the road. Drivers need to be extra cautious when driving in bad weather conditions not only for themselves, but for others who are on the road as well. When asked what his least favorite part about winter driving was, Kyle Stockdale stated that “My least favorite part about winter driving is the other drivers on the road. There are the over-cautious drivers who drive really slow, even when the roads are not that slippery, and then there are the under-cautious drivers who aren’t driving safe when the roads are dangerous putting them and others at risk of an accident.” Every driver must be aware of the road conditions to avoid an accident. The first step in becoming prepared for the winter months begins with your car. If there is anything that needs to be repaired for your vehicle should be done before winter. Things that you should check on your vehicle are as follows: - Your cars electrical system - Brakes - Tires - Exhaust system - Windshield wipers/wiper fluid and - Heating and cooling system By getting your car in tip-top shape for winter you can prevent yourself from getting stranded in the bitter cold. To prepare yourself in the event of a break down, you should keep a supply kit in your vehicle. Having a supply kit ready in your vehicle can keep you safe and warm when waiting for help to arrive. A cell phone is very important to have with you in your vehicle this time of yea,r so you can call for help if you do get stranded. Other supplies you should have in your kit are: - An ice scraper - Extra boots - A blanket - Winter clothes and - A flashlight - A shovel The last thing that is important to know about winter driving is what to do when you get stuck or stranded. There are many things that you can do to make sure that you stay safe and ready for when this happens. Drivers who get stuck or stranded in the cold should remember: - Don’t panic! This can make the situation worse. - Call for help as soon as you can. - Turn on flashing lights or flares. - Wear a hat and scarf-- the head and neck are major sources of heat loss in the body. - Avoid over-exertion and over-exposure to the cold. Cold weather can put extra stress on the heart and contribute to the hazards of over-exertion. - Monitor for signs of frostbite and hypothermia. - Watch for traffic or rescuers. - To save yourself from being stuck or stranded in the snow this winter you need to protect yourself by following these and many other winter driving tips. Even though accidents do happen, you can avoid this by being prepared for the winter months ahead. Add as favourites (0)
