How to Park On Campus Without Receiving a Citation PDF Print E-mail

There seems to be a bit of confusion when it comes to the parking regulations here at Lake Superior State University.   The LSSU Public Safety Department, in an attempt to help clear up this confusion, would like you to know the following information.

Parking on campus is a privilege at the University.  There admittedly is a shortage of spaces available but LSSU is not the only University where this situation exists.  The University of Michigan, for example, only issues permits to junior, senior and graduate students.  Lot usage and designations have been determined to meet the needs of the students, staff, faculty, and visitors who comprise the campus community.  These designations are reviewed periodically to make sure they are still adequately meeting the needs of the campus community.

The following is a brief description of the parking that is available on campus:

A, B, E, and N Lots are designated for commuter and faculty/staff parking.  These lots are restricted from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. to those with the appropriate permits.  They are also closed from midnight until 7:00 a.m. to allow for maintenance and snow removal during the winter months.

C, F, G, H, L, S, and T Lots are designated parking for the various residence halls on campus. Students may park in these lots with the appropriate permits.

The following lots have special circumstances connected to their designations:

D Lot is restricted 24 hours and for the use of visitors only.  All visitors must register their vehicles with the Public Safety Department prior to leaving their vehicles in the lot.

J Lot is restricted from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. for faculty/staff parking only.  It is open from 5:00 p.m. until midnight and closed from midnight until 7:00 a.m. to allow for maintenance and snow removal during the winter.

K Lot is designated for faculty staff, Campus Shoppe, and visitors.  It is restricted 24 hours a day.

O Lot is restricted 24 hour parking for residents of Osborn Hall and the Village.  It is open only to those with C/L permits and is closed to all parking from midnight until 7:00 a.m.

Further information is available on the LSSU website at:  http://www.lssu.edu/parking/rulesregulations.php

Anyone who receives a parking citation while on campus is entitled to appeal the citation.  This is done by filing an appeal form through the Public Safety Office.  This appeal must be filed within ten (10) days of the citation date to be considered valid.  Once an appeal has been filed, the standard fines and late fees are suspended until a decision has been rendered by the Appeals Committee.

The Appeals Committee meets once a week to review all appeals.   They consider a variety of factors before reaching a decision including the type of violation, the reason given for the violation, and the citation history of the person submitting the appeal.  The committee will then deny the appeal, let the citation stand, or if the citation is the first one received, waive the citation with a warning.  If the citations stand, the recipients are once again responsible to pay the fine within a ten (10) day period.  Any citation not paid within that time will have late fees attached.  The decisions are then emailed to those involved and a written follow up is also sent.   If you haven’t heard about an appeal, contact the Public Safety Department by either stopping in or calling 635-2100.  Please allow at least a week before you do so, however.

Students, faculty, and staff also need to remember to help the Public Safety Department and themselves by obeying the parking regulations that are in effect on campus.  Also, please make sure your information is up-to-date with vehicle registration.  If you have changed your license plate or your vehicle, you must remember to supply that information to vehicle registration.  Failing to do so invalidates your registration.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Public Safety Department or Vehicle Registration.
