Community Brings Holiday Spirit to the Arts Center PDF Print E-mail

This past Thursday evening several performing arts groups gathered in the Arts Center to help the community celebrate the holidays. The auditorium was filled with support from around the Twin Saults, bringing one of the better turn outs the auditorium has seen.

Included in the list of performers were John and Lise White with the Sault Swing Band. The band is comprised of 13 musicians who want to bring back swing music from the ‘40s and ‘50s. The musicians have been working around Canada and Northern Michigan for 17 years to achieve this goal. The group is from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and made the event an international success. If you’re interested in hearing them play, you can check their myspace page for upcoming shows at www.myspace.com/saultswingband.

Also included in the performance were Sault High Choir and Concert Band. The high school students performed very well and gave the audience a cheery example of holiday classics.

A large player in the concert was Soo Theatre Project’s “STAR” program. The establishment holds fine arts classes year round (several instructed by our own choir director, Karen Hughes) and the Holiday concert provided them a time to shine. The school was proud to show off its orchestra, bands, and vocal ensembles. The Soo Theatre Project offers a wide variety of classes (and performing groups). For example, one of their offered performing groups is the “not quite ready for prime time” players. The group is made up of adults who are either rekindling or exploring their interest in a stringed instrument. If you’re interested in learning more about the STARS program, visit the Soo Theatre Project’s website at www.sootheatre.com.

The concert was a huge success not only in bringing holiday cheer, but in bringing the community together via the fine arts. Everyone was in good cheer and really enjoyed the show. After the months of preparation the groups put in for this concert, each performer should be proud of themselves because the performance was received so well and it really helped to bring the community together with a shared joy for this special time of year.
