After an almost pathetic performance against GVSU (8-0, GLIAC 1-0) at home where they only led the game by one point at the beginning, the Lakers were hoping that the strength of 258 faithful Laker fans would propel them to their first win of the season. Being pitted against their second undefeated team in a row, it would be a daunting task at best. Our LSSU Lakers (0-6, GLIAC 0-3) have given up a loss averaging almost exactly 15 points in every game they have played this year; part of the problem being the sketchy play of the bench for LSSU. That trend remained unchanging in the game against Gannon, where they played at a low level. They shot a horrific 1-14 from the field and accumulated only 5 points, all from Mike Rader who scored the only field goal for the bench. Freshman guard Micah Hudson made his first start of his career and took over for Sophmore guard Garrett Konuszewiski. Micah has had good production off the bench and has averaged, arguably, starter numbers: 8 points per game and 15 minutes. His production was limited in this game. He shot 3 times, twice from the three, making one three ball, grabbed a single rebound and had a solo assist, while playing 27 minutes. Searching for the formula to success, the Lakers started the game. Seeming as though they had found it since the last defeat, they got a fast start, fueled by above mentioned Micah Hudsons only three point basket of the game, and the Lakers went on an 8-0 run to make the score 8-3. The feeling was short lived as Gannon one-upped LSSU and went on a 5:12 11-0 run to give them the lead. The Lakers fired back as Ryan Kuhl had a quick 4 points followed by a clean 3 by Scott Perkins, pulling LSSU within 4. Joe Lindsey followed lead and sunk 3 of his own 11 points for Gannon’s bench, his second in only 65 seconds. The Lakers did not go away though in the first half. They cut the lead to 6 a few times in the half, but ended up trailing by 10 at the end. The tale of the half was LSSU’s 37% from the field. Gannon exploded out of the gate starting the second half, more than doubling their lead less than 5 minutes in, a deficit that LSSU could only dent. Even with Sophomore Guard Scott Perkins leading all scorers with an impressive 25 points and snatching 8 rebounds, LSSU could only watch themselves fall to a GLIAC low 0-7. An interesting statistic is the 6 blocks that Gannon had, the Lakers lost by 12. Say the 6 shots weren’t blocked, that’s 12 point, assuming they went in. The Lakers could have possibly been looking at an overtime chance, instead of an embarrassing loss. Add as favourites (0)
