THE PUBLIC SAFETY REPORT

December 9, 2007 through January 20, 2008

The Lake Superior State University Public Safety Department reports the following activity for the period of December 9, 2007 through January 20, 2008:

Officers on patrol on Sunday, December 9, 2007 discovered an attic door in Brady Hall had been damaged.  A check of the attic showed nothing amiss and the door was secured by maintenance.

A frustrated student left a threatening remark on the Health Services answering machine stating he was going to blow the place up if they could not get him in.  Officers identified and contacted the subject, who said he hadn’t realized that he was in the voice mail system and was simply venting his frustration at the time he made the comment.

A resident of Brady Hall reported the theft of an unspecified amount of money from a dresser drawer.  The individual believed that one of his roommates was behind the theft and was told to come to the PSD to fill out a statement.  Neither the complainant nor any of his witnesses followed through on the complaint.

Officers were asked to check on the welfare of an Osborn Resident on Wednesday, December 12, 2007.  They were able to locate the student in her room and advised her to call home.

Patrolling officers noticed a vehicle in A Lot with a suspicious parking decal attached to the windshield.  The decal was the wrong color for the lot designation and neither the vehicle nor the registration appeared in the parking system.  Officers issued a citation at that time in order to facilitate a resolution to the situation.

The RA staff in Brady Hall found themselves in need of assistance on Thursday, December 13, 2007 when a resident became extremely combative, agitated, and destructive.  He was also heard shouting obscenities and, at one point after officers arrived on the scene, demanding to be taken to jail.  He eventually got his wish when members of the Sault Sainte Marie Police Department arrived and placed him under arrest.  He was turned over to members of Sault Fire and Rescue after being restrained for a trip to War Memorial Hospital.

A resident of Osborn Hall reported an on-going problem with vandalism in Osborn Hall on Friday, December 14, 2007.  The damage is being down in the bathroom located in the basement of the small side of the residence hall.  PSD will be increasing patrols in the area in an attempt to put a stop to the shenanigans.

A student studying in the library received several harassing text messages on her cell phone from a number she did not recognize.  The messages were sufficiently disturbing that she contacted Public Safety about them.  Officers were able to identify the text-er, an ex-boyfriend of the student who was merely playing a joke on her at the time.  He was advised to refrain from contacting her again and the investigation was closed.

On Wednesday, December 18, 2007, officers received a report that four custom-made banners were missing from the main entrance to the campus.  Officers investigated the larceny and were able to identify the suspects and get the banners back.

An argument between a resident of Brady Hall and his on-again/off-again girlfriend drew the attention of the RA staff on December 18, 2007.  The resident had, momentarily, confined the girlfriend in his room in spite of her desire to leave.  She was gone by the time officers arrived, however.  Officers advised the resident that he could not detain people against their will.  Officers than made contact with the AC and learned that the two individuals involved had an on-going history of arguments and physical confrontations.  Both individuals stated that they were going to use the up-coming break to cool off and re-evaluate their relationship.

The first home hockey game of the New Year brought an alcohol violation to the attention of officers working crowd control at the time.  Officers observed the subjects drinking a possibly alcoholic beverage from a McDonald’s cup, passing it back and forth.  The individuals were allowed to leave the arena without further action being taken.

In addition to the above actions, the Public Safety Office handled the following routine activities:   114 weapons escorts, 182 room admits, and 20 motorist assists.  We also received 39 lost and found property complainants, investigated 8 alarms, assisted maintenance with 5 problems, and investigated 2 vehicle accidents.

An end of the year statistic:  During the calendar year of 2007, the Public Safety Department received and responded to a total of 5543 incidents.

Public Safety Tip of the Week:  Winter has returned in full force.  Please make sure to drive with care.  Allow yourself additional time to reach your destination.  Carry appropriate emergency supplies in your vehicle, especially if make a trip home.  And please, assist maintenance in keeping the parking lots plowed by parking in designated overnight lots only.
