As most of you know the annual searchmont trip is planned for February 7th of this year. This is a trip that many students look forward to attending every year but this year there has been some controversy about how much money was spent on this trip. There are three separate reasons why there is controversy: Student government requested and received the money from the discretionary funding committee (DFC), some people feel that the amount of money spent doesn’t match the turnout of students, and the activities board (separate of student government) student activities board (committee on student government) can not find a middle ground to work on.

Money, everything in this world revolves around it. The money being used for this trip is the students’ money and your student government is planning this trip for you. The budget for this trip is 8,000 with over 2,000 in prizes that will be given to the students at LSSU. The remaining 5,800 is to provide transportation to and from searchmont, provide free food to you why you are their, and to cut the cost down to an affordable amount so any student with interest is able to attend. Now you as the student body know how much this trip cost, where the money is coming from, and how it is being dispersed. I believe that this money is well spent and offers students a great chance to learn how to have safe non alcohol related fun and I encourage everyone who has the opportunity to, go.

It is up to the student body to determine whether the money spent is appropriate for the number of students. The way you decide this is by taking the opportunity to go hang out with your friends and classmates. If you don’t snowboard or ski take this chance to get free lessons maybe you will love it. If you have no desire to learn how come and hang out with your friends in the lodge and eat until you are stuffed. Searchmont is a resort that has more options available to its patrons then just snowboarding and skiing.

The activities board plans many very successful events and does so very efficiently. I have attended several of them this year and have had a good time every chance I had to attend. The student activities board plans two to three events a year with most of its effort focused on searchmont. The members on the student activities board could have benefited greatly from the activities board’s guidance and direction on many aspects of planning the searchmont trip. What is in the past is past right now we need to focus on the future of this campus; we can do this by looking at each other as a team instead of two separate entities. So I ask to start hearing positive comments about the searchmont trip. Regardless of your personal opinion because the reason any of us has a position is for the students so do your best to spread the word and make this trip what I know it can be instead of telling people I am not going when I put a flyer on the table you are sitting by.

My intent is not to anger anyone with this letter but hopefully begin the process of working toward a solution that is more favorable to the student body of Lake State.
