Comfort is defined in the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary as “a feeling of relief or encouragement.” Well, it seems that students here at Lake Superior State University have seemed to have lost that feeling within a certain item commonly used here on campus. And that item just so happens to be a mattress.

The mattresses within the dorms of the college campus have had a significant decrease within popularity. But from the aspects of two full-time students, the level of comfort with the seemingly downgraded mattresses is nothing but a never-ending battle between mindset and physicality. John Brady is a freshman nursing major who, as spectacular as it seems, finds the mattresses on campus quite inviting and comfortable. Some would say that the most common place you could find him within his living quarters is in his bed.

“I would usually use my bed around three times a day,” he explained. He would later explain that most of the time spent in his bed involved “sleeping, napping and lounging around.”

It would seem that this freshman could possibly be one of the few under the state of mind that the mattresses hinted at a sign of comfort for the average student. But in John’s case, it is “definitely more of the physical aspects of it.”

According to the nursing student, it’s more of using the situation to your advantage for improvement.

“I guess it depends on how many pillows you have on it,” John says. “For instance, I have two body pillows and two regular pillows. But even without them, I would have to say that the mattresses are still mildly comfortable.”

But while John might find these mattresses “mildly comfortable,” others seem to have different opinions. “I do not find these mattresses comfortable,” says Randy Harris. “I can’t see how anyone possibly can.” Randy Daunte Harris is a sophomore computer science major who, like a bucketful of students within the campus, had to make adjustments to get used to the metal-sprung menace.

“Well, first, I acquired some extra pillows from home,” he explained. “And on some random nights, I placed my mattress on the floor, making it more tolerable.” From this sophomore, it would seem that he would qualify for the physical toll of the school mattresses. But the question still stands. Does the state of mind or the physical conditions of the mattresses create more of an impact?

“I feel that it is equally both.” Randy says. “It just depends on who you are.” John Brady also seems to agree with this statement. “It’s equally physical and mental,” he agrees, “because every person likes a different type of mattress. That’s why there are firm mattresses, futon mattresses and waterbeds.” Well let’s just hope that others can soon adapt to these two students ways of thinking.
