Do you ever feel as though you are overworked and don’t have enough time to get stuff done? It is a common acknowledgement that there is just not enough time in the day to fulfill daily duties, but maybe it is because most college students don’t budget their time as effectively as they should, and often times the misuse of time is the cause of people not making it through college and falling below the mandated 2.0 GPA. Don’t panic, there are things that you can do to get yourself back on the right foot and keep your grades up without too much stress. Jillena Rose from the learning center put on a small seminar that would hopefully teach student these vital skills to make themselves better students.

An excerpt from her handout that intended to give students some tips on how to manage time stated that: “Time management is one of the biggest challenges people have in their lives. It is especially difficult for college students because there is so much unstructured time to work with.” She explained to the people who came that there is really a lot of time in a week if you can use it effectively, and then broke the time down saying that there are a total of 168 hours in one week, and if you take 15 hours of classes a week, factoring in sleep and the recommended 2 hours outside of class for every hour in class, you really have 67 hours that are free. Of course that will change if you are working, but even a full time worker has 27 hours with which to get anything done.

What to do with those free hours? Jillena suggests that to budget the time, students should invest in a planner of some sort where they can structure how they are going to use what time. “If you write down your plans, you are more likely to keep commitments”, she explained. Some of her tips on how to make the schedule and find your free hours are: record fixed commitments-classes, work and eating first, then look at what you have left and schedule times for studying and getting school work done, yes you also need to schedule recreation time to help de-stress yourself.

Jillena encourages any students who are running into any academic problem of any kind to visit the Learning Center because there are a lot of resources there to help you, the student.
