Next Friday, February 15 at 8 pm, Lee Murdock will be bringing a collection of stories through song to the Lake State Arts Center. Murdock has been performing folk music since the mid 1970s and bases his songs on the stories of sailors, fishermen, and lighthouse keepers. Murdock has performed with the Blue Water Band and has played several festivals. His music is a combination of folksongs, blues, derived from old work songs of sailors and lumberjacks. Murdock also aims to make his music “exciting to people today.” In order to please today’s audience with a genuine celebration of the past, Murdock combines research with a current insight to create his music. Murdock’s maritime music (how’s that for alliteration) is a celebration of the lifestyle of those living in the Great Lakes Region. He is a storyteller and a real people person. He enjoys talking to people and then hearing and relating their stories. He has made the Great Lakes Region his home and enjoys the spirit of the lakes. His music is exciting in part because he is passionate not only about the lakes and its people, but about the stories and ways of those people. He does something he truly enjoys and hopes to bring that joy to the audience. “The premier interpreter of songs and tales about the Great Lakes … Murdock’s regionalist approach does the area proud,” said Dirty Linen Magazine’s Paul-Emile Comeau. People from all over the region enjoy Murdock’s regional music and take pride in his understanding and expression of a common passion for the mariner’s lifestyle. Murdock presents roughly 150 shows in the United States and Canada each year, several of them introducing school children to folk music. You can download four of his tracks on his website www.leemurdock.com. Tickets for the performance are available through the Arts Center. Students can purchase tickets for $5, adults for $10. Murdock also has 14 CDs available for purchase as well as 2 songbooks and a collection of some of the stories behind his music in a book titled SongQuest. Add as favourites (0)
