THE PUBLIC SAFETY REPORT January 28 through February 4, 2008 The inclement weather on Wednesday, January 30, apparently led some bored residents of the Village to an attempt to amuse themselves by smoking an illicit substance. The resident and a visitor were turned over to the Sault Sainte Marie Police Department. A noise complaint in Brady Hall at 0251 on Friday, February 1, led to a brief discussion with a resident and his girlfriend. She wanted him to accompany her back to Osborn Hall. Officers decided that might only lead to another complaint later that night and advised the resident to remain in Brady Hall at the same time they advised the resident of Osborn Hall to return to her room. The pair did not accept the request at first, but finally appeared to have settled down in their own rooms. Excessive partying on Saturday, February 2, led to a resident of Brady Hall needing medical attention 0310. The resident had returned from imbibing at an off-campus residence when he became combative with his roommates and began to vomit. The roommates contacted the RA, who in turn contacted the Public Safety Department. Officers arrived on the scene and found the subject to be extremely intoxicated but no longer combative. He was turned over to Sault Fire and Rescue upon their arrival. A member of the Norris Center staff decided that she was above following the instructions of officers on duty for the I-500. Officers were tasked with keeping the parking lots of the Norris Center free of race-goers so that they would be available for those people using the facilities. The staff member, after being instructed where to park, parked in a different location, left the vehicle, and headed in the direction of the I-500 track. She was issued a citation and officers discussed the situation with her supervisor. A Public Safety officer working the hockey game on Saturday, February 2, 2008 was assaulted by an apparently intoxicated individual. The incident began when the individual, who was driving recklessly, almost hit an older man who was on foot in the lot. When the driver returned to the lot to confront the man, the officer stepped in and was pushed by the man in his attempt to get at the older man. Officers were able to get the vehicle information and the incident will be discussed with members of the Sault Sainte Marie Police Department. In addition to the above actions, the Public Safety Office handled the following routine activities: 19 weapons escorts, 65 room admits, and 14 motorist assists. We also received 14 lost and found property complainants, investigated 2 alarms, assisted maintenance with 3 problems, and investigated 1 vehicle accident. Public Safety Tip of the Week: Please remember that you are not the sole resident of your hall. You live with others and need to be aware of their rights. It is against university policy to give anyone the key to your room. It takes all residents to ensure the safety and security of their residence halls. Add as favourites (0)
