The LSSU basketball games scheduled for Wednesday, January 30, against Northern Michigan University were pushed back one day due to the extreme weather conditions that forced every University in the Upper Peninsula to close. This postponement didn’t side track the Lakers in their quest to finish the month out on a solid .500 record, and set the stage for their match-up with NMU on the February 23 in Marquette.

282 people showed up to cheer on the Ladies as they started their second to last game to be played on the Laker court this season. Beforehand, the game seemed as though it were going to be close, due to their standings and record overall, and in the conference. Heading into the game the Lakers boasted a record of 8-12 (4-8 GLIAC), while NMU was 8-11 (3-8 GLIAC).

As the game started, NMU went on a fast 7-0 run that challenged the Lakers mentally, but as all good teams do, they kept their head in that game and slowly gained momentum to steam back and put the pressure on the Wildcats of NMU. Fueled by two Emily Joseph’s 3 point tries, the Lakers cut the game to 14-15, a one point deficit. After assisting on the last 3 pointer from Joseph, Senior Guard Shalyn Beauchamp nailed a 3 of her own to give the Lakers their first lead of the game.

With 7:00 left in the period Steffani Stoeger of NMU hit a jumper of her own to tie the game, but then, on a feed from Jaclyn Armstrong, freshman Kathrine LaPrairie lit up the score board from 3 land and gave the Lakers some breathing room. 40 seconds later Amanda Epolito found her for another 3 which gave LSSU a 6 point lead. Epolito didn’t let a good thing end as she found LePrairie again for two more points. As if to add an exclamation point on the strong run, Alyssa Vanderwal rejected NMU’s Allison Carroll’s shot. 3 minutes later Shelle Rochon hit a 3 of her own to give the Lakers a double digit lead, which the closed out the half with.

The Lakers got their lead with in the first half with outstanding shooting from the 3 point line as they shot a red hot 7-9 (77.8%). They also shot over 50% from the field and held NMU to under 40%.

Right out of the gate in the second half, Allison Jaynes hit a 3 to show that they weren’t going to let up because of a double digit lead, she made another one a few minutes later that gave the Lakes a huge 12 point lead. As the game continued, the Lakers showed that they were the superior team as their lead was only cut down to 7, and that was in the last three minutes of the game where the Lakers scored enough to finish the game 14 points ahead, beating the Wildcats 73-59.

This was key game in the conference as LSSU looks ahead to the GLAIC tournament later in the year.
