Sitting just a few games behind Michigan Tech (10-9, 5-6 GLIAC) in the GLIAC standings, LSSU (6-12, GLIAC 5-8) was hoping to lessen the spread for the upcoming tournament. Not having met this team so far this year, the Lakers were looking to extend their blazing home record to 7-3, but were cut just a little bit short not being able to edge out the Huskies. The Lakers fell to 6-13 on the season, but suffered only their fourth loss at home. Right off the bat Scott Perkins was fouled and went to take two from the line and split the pair. In the game against NMU last Thursday Perkins shot a solid 4-6. MTU then went on an 8-25 run, shooting 11-14 (78.5%); it’s not that the Lakers weren’t playing good defense, it was more so attributed to MTU just going on a hot steak and not missing much. Half-way through the first half, the Lakers were down by 17, but then started to make a run of their own. Scott Perkins, Micha Hudson, and Ryan Kuhl took over this part of the game as they scored a scorching 17 points in the next 7 minutes of play to bring the Lakers close, but more importantly show MTU that they aren’t going away without a big fight. Quick fouls by Josh Makela and Tim Storm sent two of the Lakers best free throw shooters, Tim VanOudheusden (who was coming off a perfect game at the line against NMU 9-9) and Mark Morse. They both converted on their shots, bringing the Lakers within 8. The last four minutes of the game were all VanOudheusden and Kuhl. Tim laid down two more from the line to finish his second straight game with perfect attempts from the free throw line, they combined for 9 points. The half ended with a score of 35-42 in favor of MTU. Kuhl had a block 90 seconds out of the locker room to stem a small run by MTU. A minute later Garrett Konuszewski stripped Tim Storm and was fouled as he put one in by Sean Geary, he added the extra point to complete the 3-point play. After giving up a foul and two free throws, Kuhl sink two of his own on a shooting foul; moments later Micha Hudson put one in to reduce MTU’s lead to only 9 points. The Lakers stalled for the next two and a half minutes, but was able to keep MTU off the scoreboard during that drought as well. Kuhl ended the drought as he sliced a pair of free throws. Nathan Householder picked Don Fowlers pocket and gave the ball up to Scott Perkins, who was fouled on his shot, but made free throws. Mike Szatko sank a three for MTU to reenergize their 12 point lead. Kuhl and Konuszewski answered with makes of their own from inside the arc, but were countered be an MTU 3, which VanOudheusden negated with one of his own, and Mark Morse one-upped with two of his own 3-point bombs. The Lakers were within 5 points, but a 9 point run froze the game, as MTU marched onto win. Kuhl lead all scorers and rebounders with 17 and 11 respectively. Hudson had 13, Morse and VanOudheusden both added 11, Perkins dropped 10 and Konuszewski contributed 9. Add as favourites (0)
