Thursday night many Lake State students gathered at Ontario’s Searchmont Ski resort for a night of skiing, snowboarding, food, games, and raffles to celebrate Winter Carnival. The event began at 5 pm with busing from the university and ended at roughly 9 pm. Tickets for the ski lift were $10 and rentals were $5. The event hosted a dinner of pizza, chicken wings, chicken tenders, nachos, and veggies. The event was highly successful with many people attending and an affordable price for a lot of fun. Games included a poker run and a raffle. The poker run was especially interesting. Envelopes were placed at various spots on the mountain. Each person who found 5 envelopes brought them in (each containing a card) and whoever had the best poker hand won. Prizes included two sets of skis and two Burton snowboards. The event went off flawlessly except in that the cafeteria closed before everyone had gotten dinner. Staff of Searchmont said that next year they plan to hand out meal vouchers so that they know everyone has gone through the line at least once and the leftovers will be first-come-first-serve. The problem was handled well; when the staff ran out of food they replaced the chicken wings with chicken tenders for the students who hadn’t eaten yet. Searchmont is a ski resort with 100 acres of space to ski or snowboard. It’s about 45 minutes from campus. However, be aware, if you plan to cross the border anytime soon, you’ll need proof of citizenship (like your birth certificate) and a photo ID. Searchmont is open from mid-December to March 30th. Look for details on the webpage about special events, the week of March 10 is “Our Mountain Week” which will include live music and competitions. There are 18 trails total (LSSU students used the bunny hill and the Main hill). Searchmont is open from 9 am to 4 pm for day skiing and then 4:30 pm to 10 pm for night skiing.  Add as favourites (0)
