A new society is coming to Lake Superior State University, with intent to raise leadership quality and quantity. The society is sponsored by Omicron Delta Kappa, which is known as the “National Honor Society for College Students”, and focuses on recruiting students who are great scholars and leaders with exemplary character.

Distinction as an Omicron Delta Kappa member is a hard thing to come by. According to their website you must meet the following criteria to be eligible for membership: Rank in the top 35% of your University academically and be involved in a leadership position in one of the following: scholarship; athletics; campus or community service, social and religious activities, campus government; journalism, speech and the mass media, and creative and performing arts.

The first meeting was on February 5 and was open to students who meet all of the characteristics mentioned above. At the meeting, these officials were elected to these offices by way of a majority vote: Ashley Brauning- Student President, Jordan Meyer- Vice President, Weronica Lonacka- Secretary, and John Petkus- Treasurer. All of these students were able to get these posts due to their previous excellence in leadership positions and commendable academic achievement.

Ashley Baruning explained what she hopes this society can do for the University, “I hope that the University will be able to profit from the committee and we will be able to get more student leaders and that we will go into high school and be able to get more students involved and get enrollment up. Just be able to train students better on leadership skills so that when they go into career fields and they start working they will be able to bring those skills with them”

Even at their first meeting, they quickly went to work and discussed ways in which they could raise money to help with the schools fee to get into the society. Some of the ideas they discussed were the possibility of a 50/50 raffle or the sale of hot apple cider and donuts.
