Friday evening, Lake State’s Student Government members met to discuss important resolutions and take care of the business of the student body.

The meeting started with a summary from each of the committee heads. Then the group moves on to cover the resolutions set for the meeting. The first resolution discussed at the meeting was about taking out an ad in The Compass to inform students of what happens at Student Government meetings. The resolution was tabled until the next meeting in hopes of working out a deal with The Compass as opposed to spending $825 for a ¼ page ad for the rest of the semester.

The second resolution was passed easily. The resolution was basically just “dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s” by allowing funds allocated to buy gift cards to be used to buy different types of gift cards (gas cards as opposed to restaurant gift cards) as incentives for students to attend meetings.

A third resolution was also passed for Student Government to co-sponsor a group of speakers for diversity week. The speakers will be presenting on diversity in the work force. Another resolution was passed to co-sponsor a speaker on conflict resolution.

The next resolution was for spending $90 to put signs on the items in Peacock Cove so that that the items are recognized as being purchased by Student Government for the students so that the items (such as the foosball table) can’t be sold or moved as university property.

Student Government also passed a resolution to print up credit-card-sized directories of helpful numbers for students including local pizzerias, campus offices, and other helpful numbers.

The final resolution passed on Friday was to co-sponsor an event with the Activities Board. 100 movie tickets will be purchased for St. Patrick’s Day and be made available to students with food and shuttle service.

Students are encouraged to attend a student government meeting. The office is located in room 100 of the Cisler Center. The President makes sure has asks for audience involvement and makes it pleasant to be a part of the Student Government meeting.
