On Monday April 9, mentalist and illusionist Wayne Hoffman made a trip to Lake State. Hoffman has performed at thousands of venues, and has been featured on television. Instead of performing the standard magic show that we are all familiar with, Hoffman uniquely combines mind reading and illusions to captivate his audience. One report from the Chicago Tribune stated, “If Copperfield had a kid with The Amazing Kreskin, they would name him Wayne Hoffman.” Hoffman was very big on audience participation, and before the show asked random people to write down little things like telephone numbers, names, and other personal things on pieces of paper and to memorize them. Throughout the show, Hoffman asked people to stare at their pieces of paper, and think of what they wrote. One audience member thought long and hard about her cell phone number, and Hoffman, reading her mind, but not wanting to say her number out loud (lest she get called by unwanted admirers) pulled out his phone, and called her! He pulled a father and son out of the audience, and showed how the bonds of their relationship made them feel the same things, for instance, he touched the fathers arm, back and face; while never touching the son, but the son felt everything. Hoffman drew a circle on the fathers arm, but when he went to show the father, the circle was gone, only to be found on the son’s arm. At the very beginning of the show, before anything at all happened, Hoffman put his “grand finale” in an envelope, and handed it to a girl in the audience for “safe keeping”. At the end of the show, he asked her to bring the envelope onstage, and inside of it were predictions of everything that would happen in the show. This included the names of the audience members’ that participated, and what they did. He got everything right! Wayne Hoffman really is the best of the best. In fact, in 2006, he was named “Best Novelty Artist of the Year”. If you had a class or a meeting, and missed the show; or if you made it to the show, and just want to see it again, contact next year’s Activities Board Director (whomever that may be) and perhaps they can make it happen.
