February 12 through February 18, 2008

The Lake Superior State University Public Safety Department reports the following activity for the period of February 12 through February 18, 2008:

During the early morning hours of Tuesday, February 12, a resident of the Village called to report that her boyfriend had become ill while they were downstairs in the common area lounge.  His illness resulted in his vomiting on the floor.  After determining that the individual was not suffering any sort of ailment that required further medical attention, officers turned the area over to custodial personnel for cleaning.

Also on Tuesday, February 12, officers were called on to assist Sault PD officers in locating a walk-away from a nearby residence home.  The individual was located and transported to War Memorial Hospital by Sault Fire and Rescue.

Attending a Student Government meeting on Tuesday, February 12 led to the loss of a MA 102 textbook.  The student reported that he had left his bag unattended during the meeting and when he reclaimed the bag, the book was missing.  The Campus Shoppe was notified in case the book managed to make its way to that facility as a returned book.

At approximately 0004 on Wednesday, February 13, officers received a noise complaint from Erie Hall.  A scene of frequent, similar complaints, officers responded to find that it was the residents of North Erie Hall who were being loud this time.  Officer made contact with the individuals and advised them they would need to quiet down.

Again on Wednesday, February 13, a parent contacted the department because she had been unable to make contact with her son in more than 24 hours.

Valentine’s Day showed its decidedly unloving side when officers were called on to assist officers from the Sault PD in locating a suspect in a domestic assault.  Officers located the suspect on campus and turned him over to Sault PD.

Residents of Moloney Hall were apparently being too boisterous in their celebration of the weekend on Saturday, February 16.  Officers were called to that location by members of the RA staff who had been unsuccessful in contacting the residents due to the noise level inside the apartment.  When officers arrived, they could hear the residents while still outside the building.  Officers were more successful than the RA staff and made contact with the residents who, after a bit of discussion, agreed to call it a night.

On Sunday, February 17, officers were called to a residence hall to check on a student who was apparently suffering a reaction to having taken too much pain medication during an eight hour period.  An officer with medical training evaluated the student and attempted to get her to go to the hospital to be checked out.  She refused.  Officers determined she was not in imminent danger and cleared the scene.

Summoned to a disturbance in Brady Hall at 0550 on Sunday, February 18, officers found a resident sitting in the hallway crying.  He informed officers that he had recently broken up with his girlfriend but was unable to accept the situation.  He admitted that he had been off campus drinking and to creating a disturbance when he returned.  Officers were able to calm the student down and get him to return to his room.  While in the room, officers noticed a set of knives which should have been stored at the Public Safety Office.  The knives were confiscated and the resident was told to report to the department to register them once he had calmed down.

In addition to the above actions, the Public Safety Office handled the following routine activities:  11 weapons escorts, 62 room admits, and 9 motorists assists.  We also received 19 lost and found property complainants, investigated 1 alarm, assisted maintenance with 3 problems and investigated on vehicle accident.

Public Safety Tip of the Week:  Mid-term is approaching.  As students, you may begin to experience increased pressure and stress due to studying and grades.  Here are three simple tips to help you handle the situation:  Avoid burnout – don’t try to do too much at once and don’t leave your studying until the night before an important test.  A little studying at a time often works better.  Stop procrastinating – cramming only leads to failing grades and increased pressure.  And get to know your professor – they hold office hours for a reason.  Most are willing to do whatever they can to help as long as they believe a student is sincere and trying.  Give it a try.  You may find it helps.
