On January 26th the LSSU College Republicans traveled down to Oakland University to take part in the Michigan College Republican Convention.

This was the first time in the club’s 44 year history that it made the journey to this convention. LSSU was awarded four delegates to the convention, however only three attended: Alex Strobehn, Steve Lane, and Jacob Boyer.

The point of the convention was to elect new state MFCR leaders, and to vote on amendments to the state by-laws. LSSU College Republican President Alex Strobehn endorsed incumbent chair Justin Zatkoff who went on to win a 2nd term. Alex Strobehn was nominated in a contested race for 2nd Vice Chair. It was the first time in the Michigan College Republican Federation’s history that someone from the Upper Peninsula was nominated for a state wide officer position.

Alex was defeated, but was quoted saying during his nomination speech, “We are both really good candidates, no matter who you vote for I guarantee things will get done.” Alex Strobehn is to be appointed MFCR Field Rep. for the Upper Peninsula at the executive committee meeting.

Then on February 14th the LSSU College Republicans attended the Michigan Republican Convention. This is a much larger meeting which includes speeches from all major elected officials, district caucus’s, campaign recruitment, election of national delegates, and election of the states national committee man and woman.

The LSSU College Republican’s went down to assist State Senator Allen with constituent affairs.

Two members were elected as voting delegates to the state convention for Chippewa County. They are Alex Strobehn, and Amy Wyhowski. The club member’s were able to meet with many elected state officials including, but not exclusive too: Sen. Candidate Jack Hogendyke, Congressman Mike Rogers, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, and Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Clifford Taylor.

At Sen. Allen’s constituent breakfast the club awarded him an honorary membership for the outstanding assistance he has given to the club.
