Life in Sault Ste. Marie, MI isn’t always glamorous or exciting for college students.  Being a small town we don’t have the entertainment options that many other universities have.  Why not take some of the down time and give back to others in the community?  Although we are a small town, we are full of volunteer opportunities for students with all different interests.  Maybe you would like to help out with a group; many of the Greek organizations on campus donate their time and energy to several different philanthropies.  Or maybe you would rather volunteer on your own but you aren’t sure where to start.  Look no further than the United Way Volunteer Center on our very own campus.

However you choose to donate your time, here are some options you might be interested in.  Do you think you know all there is to know about LSSU?  Why not contact Admissions and become a tour guide and help bring in future Lakers.  Are you an animal lover?  Our local animal shelter is always looking for volunteers to play with the animals, but also for pet food and kitty litter donations.  Do you like standing up for a cause and raising money to help raise awareness of diseases?  Why not join a Relay for Life team, or even create your own?  You can help the American Cancer Society raise money to help find cures for cancer patients.  Or maybe you would like to give a little bit of yourself and possibly save three lives; donating blood is a very good way to volunteer about an hour of your time.  Are you interested in helping out kids in the community?  Why not donate your time by helping out at the Boys and Girls Club, coaching an elementary school sports team or even reading in classrooms.  Are you interested in making a difference in a teen’s life?  Upward Bound looks for tutors during the school year and tutor counselors for six weeks during the summer.  Upward Bound is a college preparatory program for high school students in the EUP.

Whatever choice you make when deciding what volunteer opportunity is right for you; remember that it only takes a little bit of effort to make a difference in the life of another.  The options are endless when it comes to helping out on LSSU’s campus as well within the Sault Ste. Marie community.  If you can’t find something to fit your interests, create a project that does; a little work goes a long way.
