Dennis and Gary Who? PDF Print E-mail

As of late Dennis Lennox, a CMU student, has been growing in media attention. Who is  he you might ask?  Is he an evil mastermind, or a political genius? He can be either depending on who you are talking too.

The controversy is stemmed by a CMU professor  who is also running for congress. Let me take you back to the very beginning.

Gary Peters, a Democrat, was the Michigan  Lottery Commissioner, but resigned his position in 2007 to prepare to run for Congress against Joe Knollenberg in Michigan’s 9th district.

Prior to officially starting his campaign he signed as a professor as CMU. There he taught one class a semester for $65,000. This contract obligates him teach at the university through the 2009-10 academic year.

This is where Dennis Lennox comes into the picture.

Dennis feels that the university hired him for political reasons, and he couldn’t possible be a good professor while running for Congress.

Lennox argues that Gary Peters lives 120 miles from the university, and regularly does not show up to his office hours.

Dennis formed a group called Students Against Gary Peters. Since the group was formed they protested Peters by picketing, passing flyers, and record.

Dennis Lennox for weeks followed Gary Peters with a camcorder when Mr. Peters was on school property. In addition Dennis began conducting research in an attempt to prove Mr. Peters to be fraudulently hired.

Dennis attempted to FOIA Dean of the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, Pamela Gates. FOIA is an abbreviation for the Michigan Freedom of Information Act, under which allot of Mr. Peters hiring information was available.

Dennis Lennox in the process of the FOI pulled out his camera to use as evidence that the FOIA was delivered.

Mrs. Gates swatted at his hand, and then evicted Dennis from her office. Clips of this on youtube.com received over 2000 hits in the first 2 days

Dennis filed assault charges, but they were dropped by the prosecutor. After this event the University enacted a policy banning video cameras on campus. Which the ACLU claims is a violation of the expression of freedom.

The FOI shows that the administrators were looking to hire specifically a Democrat for the position.

In response CMU made an argument that they have the authority to hire whomever they want. In addition they claim that Dennis is only doing it because Mr. Peters is a Democrat.Dennis, an outspoken conservative, claims his protests are only in the interests of the Michigan tax payers.

Currently Dennis Lennox is up for a disciplinary hearing resulting from allegedly handing out flyers in a class room, which violates university policy.

Dennis Lennox if found guilty by the university could face minor citations or fines to expulsion from the University.

Tuesday Jan. 29th, OutsideLansing.com, a state-wide political blog, published emails from members of the CMU faculty that accused Dennis Lennox of being the next Virginia Tech shooter. This email if proven to be authentic could make the university liable for slander.
