This past week there appeared an issue of the John Door directly attacking the university posting policy for being unconstitutional. It appeared on Wednesday night and by Thursday afternoon nearly all of the postings were gone. The postings were removed by Public Safety officers while in uniform. This is a gross misuse of power; these postings were in no way a threat to the public. If “illegal” postings are to be removed, then the duty of removing them falls upon the Office of Campus Life. A former student, and past editor of the John Door, declares that such postings have never officially been approved. Further, it once bore a copy of the approval stamp with a large slash through it to show that the information contained within was not sanctioned by the university. The John Door was by the students, for the students, and not under any control by the Administration. Several weeks ago there was a different John Door. This one was provided by the Student Services and Concerns Committee and contained information on what they had done this year. This posting was allowed to stay up for days. No one moved to remove it before the students could be informed. This was an official posting from a Student Government Committee, but it was just as “illegal” as the latest John Door. Technically speaking, the SSC posting violated more of the posting policy. Both were posted in unapproved areas; neither was approved by the Office of Campus Life. The SSC posting however used clear packing tape whereas the Publius John Door used the approved method of masking tape. The John Door has long been an independent, anonymous publication on the campus of LSSU. It is the method used by those who are in positions to know, to inform the masses about issues affecting them. It has existed on the fringes, not approved by the Administration but largely ignored, allowed to exist. We cannot stand by while this defender of student rights is censored. Add as favourites (0)
